Help with a Naught Nic

| Help!!!
I'm trying to be real good and actually try out RRAS so I really learn it. So I bought a second NIC, installed it, and the server thinks it's an ethernet controller, not a nic card. It's a 3Com OfficeConnect. The existing one is an Intel, I think.
W2K Advanced Server
I updated everything I could possibly think of, including the bios, to no avail.
Have spent too long on this trying to figure it out. Will go back to the books and forget the real life, but I'm sure it will be needling me until I get an answer, so any advice would be real appreciated.
Think I'll post this on a few other forums, as well.
Thanks in advance!!!! | |

| Is the Card on the HCL?
Go here to check it out:
http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/results.asp
Also, since NIC's are so cheap, i would just go the easy Way and drop another one in.
Did you install Servicepack 3 ???
It is available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows200...sp3/sp3lang.asp
I found some NIC's locally here for as low as $7.99, so there is no reason to spend hours, trying to figure out the possible conflict.
You could try to remove both Network cards, remove the drivers in Safe-mode and re-install them one at the Time, the 3-Com first.
just my 2 cents... | |

| Haven't checked the HCL (I know, I know) but did install SP3.
This card was $35.00 and my significant other would probably raise an eyebrow if I just went out and bought another one without giving it a bit of the college try.
That's not a bad idea, though, about installing the 3-Com first. I might give that a try, when I feel like dragging out the tools again. I've got a small, very, very furry puppy who loves to tear across the carpet and beeline it toward my open and very vulnerable, static-sensitive motherboard, an ESD strap that just broke tonight (yes, I actually insist on using one), and a poorly engineered chassis that has the dumb port openings that permanently pop out. So, after trying two or three PCI slots, I've got a duct-taped server, to boot. To boot. Cute, very cute.
Thanks. | |

lol!
You may want to, after pulling the NIC's out, get rid of any "not-so-important" Cards like Sound,Capture,Firewire or what have you.
You can install them later.
Also, download the newest Drivers for both NIC's first, before you try it.
www.Driversguide.com is good for finding the right Drivers.
Also, consider plugging the Card in different PCI-Slots.
Some Motherboards have "priority-slots", meaning the first PCI-slot under the AGP has the highest Priority and so on.
Then, last but not least, there is also "sharing" PCI-Slots, meaning they will share an IRQ.
Whish you the best and let us know, how it went!

| I know I'm not a constant visitor - kids, dogs, work, spouse, studies, eating and sleeping tend to keep me away) but it's always nice to pop in for a cup of java or two.
Thanks DV, for your help. May give it another shot today.

| Tribo,
It has been some time...
did you fix it?
and how?
| |
|
| Thanks for the inquiry!!! No, I haven't fixed it yet. Haven't thought about it for a week or so. Trying to get the kids ready for school and pondering on whether I should start studying for 219.
You, my friend, will be the first to know, though! I promise!

| If I remember correctly, 3Com PCI card need to be in a Bus Master Slot, so check if the Bus Master in enabled.
Ethernet controller is a NIC card though. You did not get the correct driver if you see that. Sometime, what I have found when Win2k (all versions) auto search a driver they sometime load the wrong one. I will look into the driver CD and check for the Win2k folder and point the driver installation to that folder.
Good luck with life of NON-IT... I know how that can be... |
