In the device manager of win98se the device is listed with an exclamation mark.

the driver installation process states:

First, go to this site:

http://www.asound.net/

Download your driver to floppy disk.

Take off all the drivers listed for the device on your computer. Reboot computer it should pick up the soundcard - if not go into Add/Remove Hardware and do a search.

Then pick your soundcard, or if not listed, and choose Have disk a point to your A: drive and load driver from there.

Sounds like one of those nutty issues...

I've had problems like this before, try these 2 suggestions, they usually always work for me:

1. Go into safe mode & remove everything under "sound, video, & game controllers" & "other devices." Then copy the sound card driver files to the INF folder under the Windows directory. You'll probably have to click view-folder options-and select show all files... since this folder is hidden by default.

2. If that doesn't work, go back to safe mode & remove anything under "sound, video, & game controllers" & "other devices." This time have the sound card drivers available on a floppy disk & rename the INF folder to something like INFX so windows doesn't load whatever drivers are already there. Then when you reboot & Windows finds the card, point it to the floppy for the drivers & hopefully it will work!

Hope this helps!

Hmmmm ..... You should be able to double-click on this file from the floppy and load from there!!

I would try and download the driver again and see if you have the same problem - if you do I would e-mail the manufacturer and ask them what's going on!! They should be able to point you in the right direction!!

the sound card from hell is now functioning yet I had to skip a lot of the files in the "wizard" setup process.
also, now the system has a joystick device, albeit an invisible one
