| I have just added a wireless Access Point to my home network. I use Linksys WAP 11.
It was very easy to setup, you just plug it in, connect it to the HUB with UTP patch cable, connect it to PC with USB cable, install drivers, configure it via USB connection (Assign IP, wireless ID, etc.) and it’s ready to go. USB connection is no longer needed after the initial configuration.
I use the Belkins PCMCI wireless card for the laptop and it was just as easy to setup and it worked!
I can now go anywhere in the house with my mini laptop and browse the web. My office is in the basement and I can be in the second floor bedroom and use the laptop.
Unfortunately I did not have such luck with a D-Link PCI card for my office Windows 2000 servers. I tried installing it in both on my Windows 2000 servers and it just would not work. On the first server it would not work if I disable the previously installed NIC card and on the second server it just would not install correctly. (shows devise has a problem in device manager)
I was able to install in on Windows 2000 PRO and it works just fine.
The system requirements on the box mention Windows 2000, but does not mention server or PRO.
Now I want to know if anyone is using any kind of 802.11b wireless card in the Windows 2000 Server. I need the card that will work in the server, it can be a PC card or even a USB card.
Also, don't belive that wireless network works up to 500 feet in the buliding. In my house it shows the poor signal strength even when I'm on the second floor and the access point is in the basement. Just 2 floors straight, only wooden floors, no concreate, up and the signal is poor, but still works, thanks to built in buffer that most 802.11b devices use. |
