MCSE Certification & Job search Time

| How long after you received your full MCSE certification, did it take you to find a related position? | |

| you shouldnt count on mcse title only to find a job, u better have some other things. | |

| Hi NickL,
I was fortunate enough to already be in a related position when I started taking my certifications.
But it's a very interesting question!

| I agree with Moranz, don't depend on a certification to get a job. Especially since there are so many paper certs out there. | |

I thought you were in favor of certification. But it is better to get a certification that not everyone else has (Linux+, Oracle, Solaris, etc..). There are hundreds of thousands of A+, MCSE, and MCSA certified individuals only on paper out there.

| I am in favor of certs, I would love to have them all, but I'm not depending on them to get a good job, I'm depending on the ability to do the job. | |

| I think if you are in a IT company already and you want to move to a different area, having the MCSE will get you that role you want...that's the carrot at the end of the stick for me anyway ;-)))

| I am still working on mine so I couldn't respond to the post. But I was told before attending one of those 'tech schools' that I'd be in the 28 a year range after achieving an A+ cert. ha! One year wasted (sort of) in school and six months of recruiters laughing at me, behind closed doors of course. I am now in a call center for a credit card company looking for work in the IT field that will give me incentive to get the MCSE. I have that now, but it is taking me longer to get the training I need. | |

| I contracted for related positions about 1 year before attaining my MCSE. | |

| I actually got my first IT job after I recieved my MCP in 1999, It was a entry level position which realistically is all anyone without expierience can expect.
Now in a year or 2 after you`ve proven yourself you can expect much better things to come your way.
Don`t believe the sales pitch of many training companies "with an MCSE companies will be begging to pay you $60,000"
They will take a chance on you for 25,000 or 30,000 and let you work your way up if your good.

| Chodan has got it pretty much right. except with the current economy and .coms disaster, salaries are very much dropping into middle to low grade pay. IT is making a major conversion as to how it's apporach can impact a bussiness' potential and overall growth or longevity. Those of us who have been recently laid off and are finally getting back into the work place will have to wait about 3 more years until our salaries regain the momentum they had prior to the .com failures. You certainly should mot expect to get a job because you are "certified." i've got 7 & 1/2 years experience to accompany my certs and it still took me about 11 months to land a solid carrer job again. The main difference is that if you have a certs, whatever they are, they will help you get "in the door" or noticed. Then once you get some experience your resume will do all the talking for you. Even after being out of work for almost a year, I still was rarely ever questioned about my knowledge or skills do to the fact that I have a background to support it. Once you get to that level then, and only then, can you expect to recieve something for a particular cert you may hold. i.e. getting a promotion or another position that is based on the CIW cert after you have demonstrated and proven abilities within the IT arena.
hope this helps, sorry abotu the rambling. Just don;t ever expect anything from a company without being able to practice what you preach.

| with Chodan and jyoung. Don't count on getting that "perfect" job just on certs alone. When I moved back to Texas, after an extended period in sunny So.Cal, it took me just about a year to get back into the IT arena. And then it was not the "dream" job I expected. But then, I had no certs at that time, just a few years experience with computers. But I didn't give up, I stuck it out, and proved to my supervisor that I knew what I was doing. After 6 months I was offered a promotion and a raise, plus the company would pay for my M$ exams, (if I passed).
I got my MCP in NT 4.0 about 4 months later, and then 3 months after that, was offered a better job with another company!
Only a good combination of experience and certifications will get you into your "dream" job, (I'm still looking for mine! ). We all have to start somewhere, and it is usually at the bottom. The good thing about being at the bottom is, there is no place to go but UP!
Good luck to everyone out there hunting for a job! Hope you get what you want, and soon!! |
