Do yall want a Chatroom here at Examnotes?

sammyj1967,

The great thing about this forum is that it allows people from all over the world to communicate with each other regardless of their time zones and work schedules. A live forum exists only in the moment and is only of value to people who are online at that particular time of day (or night).

There are several issues (both legal and technical) that make it impractical to implement chat functions on a web server, especially considering the fact that it's completely unnecessary: there's nothing to stop you from using mIRC or some other freely-available Internet chat technology without increasing the difficulty and expense of managing this site.

This dialogue is, of course, futile. The webmaster is kind enough to let us use this site for free; it's really up to him to make decisions based on our suggestions, and it's not exactly a democratic arrangement. In other words, what he says goes. If you don't like this arrangement, vote with your feet and find another site that will do business on your terms.

Cheers,

Skip

P.S. - Since you spammed your original message in several forums, I've taken the liberty of spamming my replies to those forums as well.

I agree with what Skipster wrote, but why not have the chatroom. You could always look in from time to time and see what is going on.

I hate Chatrooms,
however,if you Guys open one here and have certain Guidelines, why not?
Possibilities are endless.
Wouldn't mind to chat with Guys like Potatohead, wbafrank and other "well known Personalities" here on Examnotes.

I think a chatroom would be pretty cool, as much time as I spend here on the forum, I'd probably be in the chatroom double.

Another good point Deja-vue!

There would be alot of advantages for a chatroom, but also a few disadvantages!

Yeh, but this shouldn't be your single resource for information, I think.
The way it is setup now, you log on every so often, post or just read and go on with your day. I find that when I begin chatting with people, time flies and next thing you know, hours have passed. Granted those hours could have been spent obtaining info, but like someone else said, our time is better off studying.
Just my opinion.

I don't know, I spend hours on this forum anyway. At least on the weekends.

Maybe we'll add a chat some time down the line. We just did not have time to write the applet for it. Basically a chat should be written as JavaApplet that constatnly talks to the server to get the latest posts. It must also integrade with the exsisting members database.

Another solution is to use an HTML based chat that relies on page refresh tags and updates pages every 30 seconds or so. This is easier to write but it's not the best solution.

I think we'll see what we can do with JavaApplet.

If there are any programmers in here that can code applets, please contact me for this contract work.

I'm sort of "for it" and "against it." The forum is "policed" by the moderators which keeps it friendly and ensures that only fact is posted.

Therefore I believe technical questions should be kept on the forum and the "Chat Room" be used for getting to know people (ie where they work, what job they do etc) I would be all for it.

The beauty of the forum is someone in the US could post a thread at "x" time, it then could be answered by someone in Europe, then the Far East, then KiwiPete will pop up, then finally US people start answering all with 24 hours. Though an answer maybe instant within a "Chat Room" situation it would cut out a lot of forum members due to different time zones. Therefore an important piece of information may be missed by other members.

So in summary I would keep the forum for posting technical questions and the "Chat Room" for non technical questions and getting to know other members.

i love site the way it is, you can post a question and someone that gets on 2-3 hours later can read it and post an answer, with chat if you post a question and no one is able to answer at that moment, your wont get an answer.

a chatroom could be good to meet you guys from all over the world

i also think that people that come to here just to try to sell study guides, transcenders, etc(you get the idea) are going to live in those chatrooms
so i am against it

I voted yes, because I could get explanations to my questions rapidly, whereas, with the forum, I have to wait for someone to reply. However, I am not always on this site, so I would miss a lot of the discussions.

I would like to go back and sit on the fence.

It has it's good and bad points. The few chatrooms I have been in have not been talking about the topic listed. Someone mentioned earlier that we could IM which would work just as well.
