| anybody tried to install any version of win2k on a fujitsu siemens scenic pro m6?
i got above baseunit as part payment for upgrading some pii-400s for a guy, but am having problems installing win2k advanced server on it. i do not have any discs that came with the machine and was just wondering if i need manufacturers discs to install an o/s.
it came with nt4, maybe i should have tried to overinstall w2kadv, but decided to format the drive instead.
could there be an issue with w2k and the system? maybe it can just install win95 or nt.
the drive was reformatted to fat32 in another system and the entire w2k advanced server eval disc copied to the drive. the pc was booted with a win98 floppy and smartdrv was run before i ran winnt.exe. should i create w2k floppies and run winnt32.exe?
i have not tried to install another o/s on the system, or use a win9x hd from another system.

| what's the spec on the PC?
How big is the HD?
Try another OS.
what errors are you getting?
| thecomeons 2002-12-03, 1:56 pm |
| 2gb hd, pentium pro 200 cpu, 128mb ram (i think mobo refers to it as edo sdram).
the error i receive is cannot find ntldr or something like that. the file is on the hd though. according to fujitsu-siemens homepage the units shipped with win95 or nt (which is odd, considering the mobo has usb slots).
i have downloaded the latest bios and will try again tonight or tomorrow evening (there is diy to be done so wifey may not grant me permission - no time tonight, really, though as i promised a friend i would lend him a spare psu).
i phoned up a local pc part wholesaler earlier today with a query from a guy i do upgrade work for and brought up my little problem. he seemed to think that even though win2k can run on p133 and better, it just may not work with this system (i have an athlon on an asus mobo that wouldn't install win2k either )

formatted to fat32. the idea of fat16 had crossed my mind too. maybe i'll get time to do something to it before friday. spent two hours last night trying to flash the bios, but the app is too big for conventional and high memory. maybe i could do it through a windows environment.

| been thinking about changing the drive. will probably install win95 first though.
don't talk to me about renaults. had me a renault 5 campus for four years and went through as many clutch cables.

| i formatted drive to fat16 and it installed win95 alright. it either must have been the version of ntfs or win2k advanced server that was the problem.
i may attempt to install win2k pro eventually, maybe there are issues with advanced server that do not exist with pro. unfortunately i do not have win2k server, otherwise i would have tried that.
i had hoped to take my lab network off crossover cable and into a hub soon. i wanted to experiment with dhcp and server stuff.
thanks for your suggestions anyway.

| win2k advanced server and w2k pro should be able to install on the same PC's. I have all three w2k OS's and have not ahd problems installing then at all. | |

| how many computers do you have in your lab, new or 2nd user? the fujitsu siemens brings mine up to four, but only two can be connected at any one time as i only use crossover cable. LOL.
p133 on cheap mobo with 128mb sdram (cannot remember which o/s installed), p166 on gigabyte with hx chipset and 98mb edo ram (win95 and win2k pro), athlon 600 on asus with 128mb ram (win98) and the fs with 128mb ram (win95).
the athlon refuse to install win2k may try again, or may try win2k advanced server. would you suggest buying a book for 215 with eval copy of win2k server instead - ie. would extra bits in advanced server throw me off if i was to do a few mcp exams?

| oh, and i updated the bios on the fujitsu siemens too. it was a XXXXX. the file i downloaded created a bootable disc with the flash util and files, but would not flash. it said the file was too big to run in the memory. oh and it was dos in german too. had to use babelfish to work out what the problem was.
i created a new disk and used himem to load the o/s into higher memory. still no luck.
in the end, after installing windows 95, i was able to flash through that. if i get time this week, i will try to install win2k again - this time i will use win2k pro and not advanced server.

| My lab at present (this is subject to change every 24hrs)
dell 410 2*PII 450 with w2k server DC
AMD 500 with w2k server DC
Athlon 1700xp with w2k pro / win98 Dual boot
Dell GXa PIII 500 with w2k pro / win98 dual boot
Athlon 900 with w2kpro /w2kserver/win98 triple boot
AMD 300 with w2k server DC (different domain)
AMD 200 with (not sure at present probably gonna put smoothwall on this week/linux based firewall software)
Laptop PII 366 w2k pro / win98 dual boot
Dell p75 upgraded to p120 dual boot w2k pro/win98 just being taken out of service, might install som form of linux on it when get time
8 port 100mb 3com hub
as far as advanced server goes, it should be ok, as you only have to install the extras if needed, otherwise it works in the same way as server.

| adds new meaning to the phrase 'sticky keys'.
though you'd still have to get some waitresses in, as the punters would order their drinks from their computer.
would you sell keg, cask, bottled or cans? would you do wines and spirits too?
