| Does anyone know of a good training CD that allows you to create and administrate user accounts etc in a training type scenario. Configuring Group Policies etc. I had a CBT one for NT4!! | |

| Why don't you use an eval copy of server, which will allow you to do it for real? | |

| I have Server but I thought the computer had to be networked to install Active Directory and thus create User Accounts etc. I don't have a network set up. | |

| Not really. You can install Server, and then use DCPROMO to upgrade to a DC. You will then be able to use all its features. Of course, without another computer connected to it, you will not be able to try out certain things. You can practice with GPO's though, as you will still have a site, domain and various OU's to play with, as well as the DC container. When you create your different users, assign them the right to logon locally. This way, you can just use your DC as a multi-user base. You can then place different users in various OU's, and play around with the user portion of GPO's. The site, domain and DC GPO's will allow you to play with the computer part. | |

| Cyber's suggestion is a good one if you absolutely can't create a little network of two PCs or more. If you're looking for solid CBT, check out www.testout.com. I used their courses for the 2000 MCSE and started using them in the NT4 days. I like the way they are done and there are some interactive labs on the course CD that you can walk through. But, like all CBTs, they're not cheap, but they are always running good specials. | |

i would do as one of the people who replied already did, to set up a dc and assign the users you create the right to logon locally. When I studied for the server exam, that is what i had to do and I was still able to learn and pass the exam.
good luck to you... | |

| If worst comes to worst... and you have 2 machines but have no hub... you can use a CrossOver cable to connect the NIC's together and you could have a "CHEAP" network of 2 machines.. it would serve the functionality you need without spending money on a Hub.. But.. I don't think you said anything about having a 2nd machine.. so this was simply an open ended suggestion. | |

I use a cross over cable plugged to the server I'm working on and a hub or laptop or any other computer near by to install DNS and AD. Do it all the time. Works fine! Did one today. Plugged it into a laptop. Ping your servername.domain name, if it returns your IP, it'll a work fine. |
