Author MCP or Network +

Hi, I recently passed the A+ exam and thought the natural order would be to take the Network + exam. I noticed, however, that there are quite a number of jobs that require that you have your MCP certification.

I wanted to get some feed back from anyone as whether getting the MCP is better than the Network+. Is one better than the other as far is the IT industry is concerned? If I have one do I also need the other? Should I get them both? Which one is more important?

Thanks and have a good one

My suggestion, since MS did away with the Networking Essentials exam, I recommend obtaining the Network+ certification as it is fundamental to MS Networks and exams.

Or you could study the material covered in the N+.Its a good guide to a firm grounding in the fundementals. But save yourself the $192 bucks and put it toward your 2K study.

I would get both as they are not mutually exclusive!
Net+ first, then MCP...
Good luck!

If you new to IT and trying to get started, I suggest moving to the Network+ first and then the MCP.

Studying for the Network+ will give a soldi understanding of the concepts of networking that can be applied to whatever direction you decide to go.

Good Luck

I too am going to say that the knowledge gained from studying for the NET+ cert is valuable... I have the NET+ cert and am now studying for Win2kPro. I find that the NET+ knowledge comes into play alot. I am not neccesarily saying spend your money on the NET+ cert, but at least pick up a good book geared toward NET+ certification. I used the Michael Meyers book which I found was easy reading and contained good general knowledge about the subject. It will by no means make you an expert, but it gives you a good foundation... and if you did decide to cert for NET + it is a very good study guide.

The Net+ will give you a good solid background in internetworking technologies. Whether you go for it or just study the material, this background will be essential as you progress in your IT career. The Net+ helped me in my preparation for the Cisco CCNA test, and the Win2K MCSE track.

What's odd is that Microsoft has dropped the networking fundamentals in their Certification track as the Windows NT 4 Track ceased. They are assuming that the individual has the networking fundamental background already when he/she goes through the Win2K track.

Because everything involved in networking today involves TCP/IP, I see the Net+ as an asset in your training. I know network technicians that understand networking in general but dont' have a clue how DNS, DHCP, WINS work or can't properly troubleshoot TCP/IP client problems.

So if you at least study the Network + material, you will have a good background in internetworking technologies.

Thanks for the advice everyone. You've made up my mind for me. I'll do the N+ exam first. I passed the A+ using Micheal Meyers. I wish I had his N+ book but I couldn't find it in my area. I'm using a study guide by David Groth, Ben Bergersen and Tim Houser.

Thanks again!

Almost all of the practice tests I am using for the 210 have a LARGE degree of networking problems. Also the other guy here at work who passed the 210 said he saw a few subnetting questions on it, and more on server 215.
So if you have little experience with a Network you will benifit from the N+ exam big time.
MS has spread out the old Networking essentials over all of the test.

I concur with that vision...

Once in a blue moon you see a job ad looking for N+ , not too many people have heard of it,the CCNA and MCP are much more recognised and sought after, though (correct me here if im wrong freak) the CCNA covers the lower OSI levels and MCP covers more the upper level.the N+ covers all.Study the N+ to see which direction you might want to go,but save your dosh for the other more desirable exams.

Cheers and good luck

I believe that N+ will give you better and stronger background on Network before you hit the MCP.

Just like other Prof stated in here..
