I'm about to embark on a MCP but I would like to know the following:

1. How long does it take, on average, to study and complete the course.

2. What hardware set-up is recommended so that I can practice the skills required.

3. Naturally I do not want to pirate but is there a trimmed down/evaluation version of win2k server/pro which I can download and practice on?

4. Any advice from those who have taken the exam?

Thanks!

Welcome to the Zoo.
1. The time required varies with the amount of hands on you have. Also everyone goes at their own pace.
2. Hardware setup at minimum should be one machine running server and one running pro.
Blow them up and fix them a few times and you should be ok
3. There are Eval versions of Pro and Server. you can order an eval of Advanced Server from Microsoft for $7.00 (shipping costs) and put it on both machines. The eval of pro I know exists but don't know where to pick it up at. These copies Die after 120 days. Of course that should be fine for playing with the system.
4. I personally have not written the tests yet but try to start with Pro or Server as the two go together on most stuff from what I have heard.

I agree with Wibur, time is an individual thing. I have sat 70-210 and 70-215, 1 month apart with no problems. I did them in that order, however a very knowledeable collegue suggests prepping for Server first as it covers most of the Pro materials anyway. After a 5 week break I am sitting 70-216 next week and plan to sit 70-217 the week after that, however that schedule fits my personal needs/abilities/study regime and is not recommended. As for hardware definately two machines. Look into vmware,(www.vmware.com) it is a great prog which lets you install virtual machines on an existing machine with full networking functionality. With 2 pc's both running vmware you can set up 2 domains or test unix or netware integration etc. You need at least 256 megs of ram to make full use of it but ram is cheaper than a new PC and your games will thank you for it!!!
Enjoy your studies and remember that there is no such thing as a stupid question.

Your help is truly appreciated!

I hope to complete everything by Jan 2002!

I have located two machines which will (just about) run both Win2k pro and server.

I will probably continue to bug all members of this forums for help over the next few months!
