winNT5.0 directory compaired to WinNT4.0 directory

| hi,
Just starting to read alan carters book
he's explaning the active directory, but
not explaning the NT 4.0 directory, so I'm
looking for a web site that explains the Active directory compaired to the winNT 4.0's directory, or what type of directory does WinNT use?
|
| What you are trying to compare is the two security databases in WinNT and Win2K. In 2K, it is known as Active Directory, and is based on X.500. In NT, it is known as a GLobal SAM, where SAM stands for Security Accounts Manager. The G. SAM in NT was limited to a size of 40MB, and we have no such restriction in AD.
Let me know if you need more...

| Thank's, freak.
Is the 40MB limit for each domain or the whole company network?
I'm understanding the Active Directory uses the Hierarchical structure, but what type of
structure dose the Global SAM use, so that it has the 40MB limit?

| the 40MB limit is per domain, hence the possibility to create other domains and link them via Trust relationships.
Also, note that the 40MB is a theoretical limit. Compaq once had a SAM over 100MB that was stable. Microsoft stops supporting domains w/ SAMs bigger than 40MB, hence the limit I mentioned.
It is a flat structure... |
