Author Ok then lets lighten this forum up a bit....

Lets find out more about the people who are going for Windows 2000 certification shall we, I'll start:

Ok my name is Yeti, I'm a self confessed loony when it comes to IT & SuperBikes. I'm 6'1" tall rather Furry and I smell. I live on my own(come on get in to the spirit of this your supposed to feel sorry for me by now...)

My hobbies include typing replys to forum posts helping other nerds like me, sitting infront of my 14 PC's (yes its true I have 14!!) playing with Linux, Unix, Netware, OS/2, Windows 3.0-2000, DOS 3.3-6.22 & BeOS (I cant get my hands on a VAX or an AS400 just yet). Not to mention playing Blizzards StarCraft in my spare time (not that I have much) oh yes I forgot to mention I train spot

I'm based in the Yorkshire district of the UK, I have a delapidated house, infact I'm the only person in the street to boost of having TWO kitchens in one (one is still in the boxes, i.e. not fitted and the same goes for one of my bedrooms)

I like social gatherings (train stations especially), Pubs, bars & clubs and scaring the life out of my MD's wife on the back of my Blackbird. I've only managed 168 MPH with her on the back so far..Gulp!! Hehehe

Hmmm.. what more can I tell you... Oh yes I'm a cert-aholic and quite mad.

Yip thats a perfect description of me....hows about you lot now?

Ok...
My name is Scott and I'm a midlife career changer in my mid 40's, who began studying for the MCSE in Feb. and finished it by July, becoming a paper MCSE. Got lucky--the IT guy at my former job was one of my mentors, and when he decided to go to another company, asked me to come along with him, and basically handle the NY side (he's on the Jersey side.)
So, though I started as a paper MCSE, I'm at least a poster board one now. Sometimes, I think I've made it up to Pressboard.

Finished the certs, then decided to get two non-retiring electives--when that was done, thought, ok, I need a break from MS, let me go for Cisco. Did that, and in the process, thought I like O/S's better than routers, though since I don't get a chance to play with ours at work (the WAN stuff is outsourced), that could be a factor.
So, figured I'd update to Win2k, and when that's done, decide from there. I like playing with Linux, so when the upgrade get done, might try to concentrate more on Unix based O/S's--at work, we have an AIX server, but most of what I do with it is fairly mechanical.

Aside from that, interested in martial arts, speak Japanese, married to a Japanese woman--who speaks of returning there, which is another reason to get certified up to Win2k--in Japan they pay more attention to these things, at least so I am told.

Hey, I'm game! My name is Eddie. I'm 30 yrs old and recently made the move from retail management to something I've always loved and wanted to work with...computers (now who's crazy??) - Ran into the age old catch-22 "need experience to get a job, can't get a job to gain the experience."
Got an entry level help desk job while midway through A+, and recently passed NTWS for my MCP. Now I'm gearing up for N+, Win2K Professional (maybe shoot for MCSE) but I'm thinking about getting a variety of the general certs: MCP, CNA, etc. [Should have probably done the NT MCSE while I had the chance, but too late now I guess] - We'll see: right now I have 7 months help desk under my belt and am just looking for a bigger pot of gold!!!
In my other life, I am a semi-professional musician (I have a music degree in Jazz guitar), listen to music constantly and am known to be a pretty avid Hockey fan from time to time. And I have my first car, a 1967 Mustang coupe, in my dad's garage that I SWEAR I'll work on someday.....
I have a wonderful family and my primary goal right now is to be able to purchase a home soon.
I'll raise my glass to everyone here and wish y'all the best of luck with your certification endeavors. Press Onward!!

Why not. I'm a 46 yr old former salesman. When my last sales job ended 5 years ago.( lord I'm getting old ) I went to work for New Horizons as a teacher I knew by the way they interviewed they did not pay beans and could not keep people. I was right after three weeks it was adios. But I came away with the knowledge to get into consulting. This was when Office 4.3 was new and the hot thing. I consulted for 6 months and was then hired at the company I was working for. We have now have 386 remote locations and 40 Frame Relay sites going. Right now there is the Network Administrator and me for support.
(no wonder I'm Bald) I passed A+ last month and am working on N+ and W2k Pro at the same time.
In my other life I am an old movie fan (B&W)and an intense game hound.

Lol, you are insane Yeti.

My name's Matt. I'm a 17 year old high school and college student who's obsessed with technology.

My current job (also my first) is being the entire IT department for a small company part time. The pay's not that great, but the job is so much fun that I'm willing to put up with that.

My obsession with technology is mainly in internetworking, gaming and *nix. I've been using Linux for a while, with Mandrake and Slackware being my favorites. I've recently started learning FreeBSD, which is the best OS I've used yet as a server.

As far as future plans go, I'm planning on starting a web hosting and technology consulting company in the near future. I'll finish up an A.S. in Computer Networking in about a year, then start working on a B.S. in Computer Science. I hope to be a CCIE by the time I'm 20.

I am certifed in MCSE Windows 2000 at September after 4 months of full time study. Then I start my Cisco certfication process at get my CCNA, CCDA, CCNP /w Security, Voice & ATM specialisation, CCDP. Just got a jobs designing the whole network infrastructure from scratch for a company.

For the last 2 years, I have a long holiday break and I got my private pilot license in airplane & commercial pilot license in helicopter. Drive around Australia for 5 months. Diving at great barrier reef.

I have 6 years of experience in networking industry & have a master degre in computer science & bachelor degree with honors in electrical & electronic engineering.

I think I will be very busy with my new jobs and have no time for CCIE lab exams although I pass the written already.

2000-12-07, 6:19 am

Interesting! Yeti, glad you got this going. I'm mid-40's, retired military for almost two years now; spent the last 5 military years in communications maintenance during which I earned an A+ cert. When I retired, I got a job as a system administrator (a tremendous break). I received a promotion early this year (now working with a WAN in a cluster server environment with NT and some UNIX boxes) and was told to get certified in NT (meaning MCSE, not MCP). I started with NT classes at the local community college in January for Server and Enterprise and began taking my exams in May (did the rest self-study). Made MCSE just before Thanksgiving. I'm taking a short break, then starting next January at the community college for W2K.

I have a beautiful, very understanding wife (of 18 years) and two teenage boys; we've homeschooled for 9 years. We live in Wyoming. I'm another one of those musician/computer geeks, and I used to be a semi-professional musician. (I could still be one, but I have no time for it now.)

Always been curious about the demographics in this field. Nice to know that I'm not the only old horse in the stream!

I'm 32, going 33 next month.

Finished MCSE+I back in October, and i-Net+ last month. Currently working on CIW and CCNA and also the big monster, 70-240. Planned to finished all but the end of 2001.

By now, I'm working as a webmaster in the city for the past four months, still under probation and find it much easy than working in the private sector.

Finally knows that why the government have to spent so much money now!!

Interesting little thread.
I am 29, French, married, and my wife is currently pregnant with twins
I started out as a college Professor, and veered to IT. I hold two Master's Degrees, and a bunch of other useless letters.
I now work as an MCT and teach the MCSE track exclusively. I own a webdesign/webhosting company, and have fun with that. I have two cats who are the funniest felines ever -- I'm quite sure every one says that, but I happen to be the only one who id right
I am pursuing the MCSE 2000 with something close to an obsessive drive.

Hi,
I seem to be the only woman here. I'm in my 40's and making a career change. I started last January and since then I've gotten my NT-MCSE, my CCNA, and I'm halfway through my CCNP. I'll finish that up in the next six weeks or so and then I'm going to take the CCNP security specialization. I'm also planning to take Checkpoint's certification test and Citrix's metaframe before starting my upgrade to the 2000 MCSE, probably in March or April if all goes well.

I'm currently working as systems administrator for a medium sized network in Tennessee. We're upgrading to 2000 and I'm in charge. I'm installing now on the workstations and I'm having to do it by hand because the computers were originally configured wrong (not by me!!) and were partitioned so that only two gig of the hard drives were being used. I have to remove the formats, repartition and reinstall using the 2000 software. Tedious but informative.

Anyhow, I'm also married, have three children, two grown, and in my former life I was a court reporter in the criminal courts, so nothing much scares me.

Hi, I'm cadman. I've been reading this thread, but haven't had time to sit down and write. Anyway, here goes...

I've been 29 for about ten years now. Married twice. Have custody of three wonderful girls (except the 13 year old, but that's just because she is 13). Work as the CAD manager for a local company. Did four years active duty in the army (mostly in Germany) and have 13 years in the army reserves. I have three more years until I can retire from that career (YES, 33 more months). Worked 10 years teaching at a local tech school before this job, teaching primary CAD, OS's, networking. Also did network maintenance, network administering, etc. Pay was the pits, but the experience was good. Finished my NT MCSE last December. Got MCT in June 2000. Teach at night for a local CTEC when it suits me. Did A+, Net+, and I-Net+ just for kicks in July (a quick way to add those letters) since I realized I'd been doing that stuff for years. In October and November I knocked out the four core exams for W2K and will have 70-219 out of way by year's end.

Oh yeah, and hunt Yeti whenever I can!

Man, not bad for 29, huh?

And on a sad note, I live in a country where we can't even elect our Commander and Thief (oops, I meant Chief).

vr2zjw, how are the IT jobs in Australia? (Seriously, I'd love to dive there)

Cadman Read my earlier post about Icewind dale for practice in Hunting the Yeti and selling the Hides for good bucks.

By the way you were close Comrade and thief is the correct term. I do believe.

As with other part of the world, they need a lot of IT people there and pay are not so bad consider the living standard. But they pay a lot of tax, about 40% to 50%. I don't live in Australia, I live in Hong Kong. I just go there for a long holiday. Tax in HK are much lower, about 10% for me, so I don't work there, I better work here. I just go there to get my flying licenses and relax.

I am 23, grew up in the IT field as my father owns a computer store. I worked for him for 8 years, then worked for an ISP, and have now moved to a new job as a head tech at a rapidly growing company. Recently I grabbed the A+ and Network+ certifications, and am now going for the MCSE2000 track. Networking is my love and cannot wait to move more exclusively into that area of our field.

Yeti the Elusive

2000-12-11, 9:37 pm

Ok here it is WAR & PEACE according to Yeti:

Ok here goes the biographical tails of a yeti in the making…

Once upon a time in a hospital in the south of England two professionals were fraternising, they were both highly respected in their field and were going places. Until one day, when my dad as he was then, made a pass at my mother in the x-ray department. That’s when it all began, 9 months later my sister was brought forth into the world kicking and screaming as only yetis do.

Life was good the three of them played and worked happily until my over amorous dad tried it on once again. Again 8 months 2 weeks later out popped me in all my ugliness. Yes its true even the high aldwin vomited at the sight of my grotesque features. Life proceeded at what appeared a normal pace for 3 years when out of the blue my younger sister popped in to the world, only to screw up my elder sisters and mine lives. It was hell, screams, tantrums and sleepless nights (how dare she invade our bliss of family life.)

The pace of life quickened and four years had passed I was seven my younger sister was 4 and my elder sister was 10. In the January of this year my mother gave birth to what looked like a baboon, my brother. How I hated him since he got all the attention that should have been destined for me. I wanted to remove him from our happy throng by what ever means necessary. This was not to be as my parents had an uncanny knack of arriving just as I was reaching the final stages of whatever cunning plan I had concocted. Needless to say time pasted and we evolved, some faster than others. By now my elder sister was thinking she was queen bee (very odd for a female yeti to think this but you never can tell what goes on in the female of a species mind in puberty.)

I was now in my teens, hair all over the place and a first class rebel, I was getting in to trouble at what seemed to be every 2-15 minutes. Life was great, until Yeti Comprehensive….

Life took a turn for the worst, the oil strike began (why to yeti’s need oil, beats me but they did.) it was the 70’s and the life of a strutting disco diva was good. Well ok a teenage disco diva, the females looked hot the clothes were well NAFF, but hey what the heck. School was my worst nightmare, homework, games and sport and puberty…aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarg
h spots (tell you what spots & fur do not mix trust me they make one hell of a mess and boy are they a turn of for the chicks.)

Even my school head of year took an instant dislike to me, maybe it was because I was so charming and good looking compared to him and not because I was a lazy good for nothing layabout. Life was hard, the homework never stopped and the constant nagging of my parents about “do your homework otherwise you can’t go out” drove me insane. I finally made it to the 5th year and was about to take my exams when I noticed that the carnal urge had taken hold of me…yes I discovered what females were really for…. Abusing and humiliating (Please note that this is a humour so ladies don’t TAKE OFFENCE.)

By now my little sister had evolved into a huge mass of fur, which if you squinted looked like a giant fur ball with attitude. It was at this stage in my life that I discovered the pleasures of evading hunters & traps. It took all my skill to evade the constant barrage of bullets, which seemed to follow wherever I wandered. The trick was to hide in trees; tall ones were the best since no sane human would be caught dead 100ft in the air with no way down except jumping. Surprisingly my height was not what it should have been for this age, according to our local doctor. Something to do with the constant hammering my limbs were taking jumping from tree to tree (maybe I was supposed to be a monkey not a yeti?) Anyway I made it to University god knows how but I did. I’d signed up for a BEng (Hons) in AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING, my theory being that I would outwit the pursuing hunters by taking to the air. Alas this was short lived since I had not spotted the flaw in my plans…should have joined the Yeti Air force…. Dhooooo. Ok so I’m a little stupid.

Having waged my way through the 1st year of what seemed even more homework and no fun I discovered the Yeti Militia (also know as the Territorial Army.) Aha I had found my calling in life, I could legally create mayhem and destruction and get paid for it. Life was bliss, all this carnage and mayhem I even forgot to go to Uni.. Bad move that one as it resulted in me having to re-sit the 2nd year. I finally made it to the final year of Yeti University and qualified! Much to the disbelief of both my parents and my head of year. Yes I was a Yeti with a degree and a bad attitude, the world owed me a living and it was going to pay me well or so I though. Truth is I was unemployed for over 10 months. The break came when I went for an interview at the local chemical works doing CAD Design. Wow money, what was this green stuff it was ace. Time passed and I began getting bored drawing lines on paper and computer screens, yeti’s were not designed for this, it was all beneath my capabilities so I left.

After sometime had passed I landed a job in an engineering firm designing HYDRO TURBINES on a VMS-VAX. I managed in a very short 6 months to create an automatic design system which well saved the company over 65% of their design & construction cost. This proved to be one of the dumbest moves I’d even made. 2 months after completion 17 of us, including the Technical Director were made redundant as a result of my creation. Way to go Yeti thanks for making us all unemployed.

2 Years more unemployment and then I discovered the AMSTRAD 2086, wow what a beast it was. I could do…absolutely nothing with it…it was wonderful. At this point in time a little known company called Microsoft had just nicked the windows idea from Mac’s and was working furiously to get it of the ground. Also another company by the name of Novell had arisen to proclaim that Networking is the Future using Netware 2.15 oooohhhhh. Ok pause for a moment and think, this all happened only what…12 years ago…eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!

Having discovered this networking malarkey I decided to investigate, I borrowed some 2500 yetner’s and enrolled on a CNE course for 2 months. This was the turning point, having acquired my new paper certification I proclaimed to all and sundry that I was going CONTRACTING. And for 11 years that’s what I did, contract in Novell then MS NT 3.1, 3.5 and 3.51 and finally 4.0. I also acquired my SCO ACE and Compaq ASE in addition to my Lotus Certified Professional. I was god incarnate (well so I thought.) No one new as much as I did about networking (boy was I sadly wrong.) some 2 years ago I meet a young up and coming engineer who was 17 years old and jeeees he knew more than I did, How? I never did find out. Anyway I then changed track and went into Project Management, the theory being that I would delegate what was needed and still keep my paws on technical skills. Well that was fine for a junior PM but since I was getting like 450 yetis a day they kind of expected me to do meetings, piss ups and more meetings.

As time moved on I became bored of all this constant chasing of contracts up and down the length of the country so I decided enough was enough and I quit. I then joined a local company acting as their company manager with a view to improving their sales & technical expertise. And here I am still after 2 years. Was it really worth waiting for????

So that’s it that’s the history of Yeti’s career to date, pretty boring if you as me but now there’s Windows 2000 to conquer

Ok, I want to play too! I too am a techno-chick. Not to many of us out here eh. Now you can probably tell from the "EH" that I'm Canadian and I've been freezing my butt off over the past 3 weeks in -20 to -55 degree weather. I'm thinking that its going to be a long winter so I might as well start thinking about the W2K upgrade!

I'm 32 yrs old in the past 6 months, I've planned my wedding on the other side of the country (and actually got thru it without valium or prozac), got laid off from my job (as a commodities market analyst), bought a house and moved both myself and my husband into it from our separate houses...and of course got my MCSE 4.0.

I am frantically looking for a job right now in my new field, which is next to impossible being that people don't even talk to entry level people...and I'm going crazy staying at home doing Squat!!!!!

So this brings me to my million dollar question...has anyone actually passed the Accelerated 4hr exam??? I could also use some advice on books and anything else that might be relevent.

Thanks guys (and gals)!
C. Hogge

Ok - my turn. I've been watching the thread, and debating posting but decided this looked like fun.

I am 31 years old, and live in Ontario Canada with my husband and our four children. Three of the children are boys, and the baby is a girl.

In the past, the positions I have held are:

1. Residential Counsellor for Developmentally Handicapped
2. Nurses Aid
3. Owner/Manager of a Pawn Shop
4. Manager of a Women's clothing store

I have always loved computers and have been playing with them since DOS and Windows 3.1. And yes, Yetti, I remember when we thought 286's were fast, and 386's could fly!!

I also have a museam kind of deal in my house of old computer parts - ie 2088-d processors and old hard drives etc.

I decided to go back to school and get my certs because I loved working on computers and had a ton of experience, but no educational qualifications. I wanted to do work that I would enjoy doing for the rest of my life and this is it.

I have acheived MOUS certification in Word and Excel, A+ certification, and to date I have earned 4 MCP's. I'm still plugging away at my NT4 MCSE, and then I am not sure whether I am going to upgrade to Windows 2000 or leave Microsoft behind and go onto Novell or Cisco.

Sincerely,
Paisleyskye
Best wishes and peace to all!!!

Geez, Yeti, this is a pretty interesting thread. Glad to see Paisleyskye checking in. By the way, skye, I finally did get my MCSE.

Sounds like you folks in Canada are having as much fun with the weather as we are in Wyoming. Thanks for sharing that polar wind with us!

Taking a break from studying and starting up again with training classes for W2K in Jan...we'll be using the Advanced Learning Series for Network Essentials (should be a good review), Professional and Server. They're going with the ALS because of the labs associated with them.

Enjoy the holidays!

Hi

Im from halesowen ,outskirts of Dudley, Birmingham, UK, for you people from the uk (ayoo alright a kid) for everyone else you got to know the brummie slang.
Anyway I work for a company in England that are based in the Atlanta USA and will be hopefully visiting there soon unfortunatelly on business.
I work in sales and have decided to start my mcse w2k, I have passed pro and will take server exam soon. I would like to work abroad and this is one of the reasons why i'm doing my mcse ( Hamburg maybe )

I used to be a singer in a band ( a bad singer at that ) I performed for Going Live an old saturday morning TV show in England when i was 17, I thought I was going to be the next Mick Jagger, but not.
I decided to start a band because i used to bump into Robert Plant( LEd zeplin) every morning buying his newspaper from the local newsagent(in stourbridge). He spoke to me and said start a band , there was bit more to it than that but that was more or less what happened.
So i did and we played a quite few gigs and then split up , but we all meet last week after about 8 years and have organised jam.
I am 27 now a bit fatter than when i was 15 so i think Going live is out the question. But it's just cool to jam and network my computers so what the hell.

Yeti you might see me playing at your local while your drinking a pint of Boddingtons.

Merry Christmas to you all.

Yeti-

Do you realize that I had to go out and BUY a 17" monitor just to read your last post! (LOL!)

Well, since everyone else is giving up their backgrounds, I figured, what the heck:

I'm 34 and live in California (yes, at times you can hear the waves break, but that is only between earthquakes). I am a network administrator for a medical company and was really "default promoted" into the job when my my boss left and the second in command took over his job.

I graduated college with a degree in broadcasting and mass media studies, mainly because that's what my father did all his life (and still does!). Follow-your-father's-footsteps sort of thing I suppose.

After college, I ended up getting a tech support job at a communications company supporting ISDN radio commerical transfers.
Nothin' beats getting yelled at by an angry station manager wanting to know why the heck his spot didn't show up on the pc!

Anyway, long story short, I've been into computers since 1985 when RAM was the 256K chips that broke if you ever so slightly bent one of the fragile pins and then bent it back again. Now THAT was art, trying to insert RAM. You kids have it easy these days with this new fangled DIMM's, etc.

So, to end it, I was really looking forward to getting my MCSE about two years ago and never got around to it. But now that I have a few years of experience under my belt, I figured, what the heck, can't hurt to get the cert.

Life history, hey? Born on 23 January 1972 11.11 ante meridianus, Sunday. Hated school, loved books. Read mostly science till I was about 12 then switched to literature. I like weird stuff, so I was a manicacl Tesla Coil (!) builder. Anyway, I went to college at LSU and majored in math and physics, but found these weren't very practical subjects. After college, I worked in India a year as a teacher (English and math) and then in Oman for a year as a programmer (LISP & Assembly). When I came back home I got stuck in this dull job coding COBOL. You may have heard ugly things about this langauge. I can assure you that they are all true! I have been working here at the Department of Education for about three years now. I heard about the MCSE maybe a year ago. I like to break things so I figured that I should be able to fix them as well. So I began trying for certifications because tech support looked a lot more fun than card walloping (we actually have a card reader here). COBOL can produce brain-rot, so I felt I HAD to do something to occupy my time. So far I am still here, but I have been having so much fun learning about networking and PC support, that I am sure that this is a smart move. I often dream of being the first man to capture a sasquatch, but then that's another story . . .

I am Unal, I am 32, male. I was working with Cray X-MP and Y-MP mainframes back in the 80's. I did a bit of software with them and Vax's back then. In 1990 I got involved in Casino's and worked managing them for the past 10 years. I have now decided I had enough of entertaining people so for the last three years was studying for Dip IT at Uni. With one year to go, I discovered the MCSE and certification, so now I am getting certified.
I got lucky and got a transfer to the IT dept at the casino complex I work at (which is one of the biggest in the world! With an advanced IT dept) They needed a manager for the projects dept. so I landed that position with just some text book experience of IT. I aim to finish W2k soon and move on to Novel or something I am sure I will find interesting.
I can see myself chasing all the certifications and letters known to man.....

I have a wife and a buetiful little girl who is three. Married 7 years.

well let me see, finally graduated from university a 3 years ago, after starting out in engineering, then failing out (excessive drinking), got smart went back and got a degree in environmental science and statistics. worked for a credit card company for the last few years (don't leave home without it), got tired of that, and moved on to the it industry. being 26, just wondering if i'll be able to compete with some of these early 20 kids who have grown up sucking on an computer proggramed pacifier.

Having been playing with computers for awhile. Kids tell me not to look when we pass the computer stores, but I need just 5 minutes. I live in Missouri and seem to be one of the few women interested in computers to get cert. Have worked in the fast food, retail chain for too long to let computers just pass me up. Will be 35 and want my CCIE. Have many moons to go to get there. I am A+, N+ and MCP under NT 4.0. Am curious about Java and Linux but job requirement wants MCP 2000. I may continue with W2K but have to see how it goes, Any advice it greatly apprceiated.

I am Jackson, 28 year old male from Australia. Not married and no kids.
I have pushed myself over the last three months to get MCSE 2000 and now I am only one exam away. I will be having a big night down the local when I pass that final exam.

2001-01-12, 3:20 pm

Okay, I'm a parttime college instructor, full-time Help Desk Specialist trying to move into systems admin or deskside support.

I'm married, and consider my husband, my 3 cats, and my computers to be my kids. (Pure geek household - there's a computer available for every resident in the house, including the cats, with computers left over.)

When I'm not working, studying, or teaching, I'm doing art. (Photography and computer art, of course.) I also play role-playing games, Vampire being the current favorite.

I'm a major knowledge dilletante - I love learning bits about everything, but need to buckle down and find something I enjoy enough to concentrate on. I've got a bunch of certs, but need to upgrade to W2k as well as get a few others this year. Sigh.

As to where I am, I'm in the U.S. Hint: our favorite pasttime is impeaching governors.

Hello All!
I thought I would add my input being that in a few weeks I start my MCSE Win2K classes…so I just know your going to be hearing from me. =]

I am 31 this month (Jan 29) Single mother of two awesome boys. I had been married for 10 years, and put my schooling off to keep my ex hubby in law school. (Yes, I was one of those smart 90s women, HA!) Of course you know the drill, he left and I hit the ground with a huge ‘thud’. And not recognizing that I actually had skills I got taken advantage of out there. I have been bounced around from employer to employer layoffs business buyout etc.. And I realized there has got to be something better than this for a life. But I wasn’t really sure what to do. Finally my boys are at the age I get to spend more time doing what I want to do (10+12). For the past 3-4 years I have been heavy into computers mostly software and Web Page building etc. I hand coded all of my websites with HTML. (Got really excited when these different web-authoring tools came out good grief! Thank GOODNESS for copy -n- paste =}) and my background is logistics, Transportation, accounting and Database management. So initially I started out for my MCSEDBA NT 4 and that is possibly where I will end up but with the Microsoft NT 4 deadlines I opted for the 2K routes to start. But for now I am getting the basic fundamentals of the net under my belt and then off to deal with common operating systems. Along with some programming classes. I plan to take the I-Net+ this afternoon. I am in the process now of building a website for my Fiancées restaurants. Soon to be released. (I am waiting for my e-commerce class and site design to be completed just in case there is anything I might be mising or new ifo out there) I made the career change not just for money but that I really enjoy my computer. I have been working jobs that just pay the bills and I don’t want to end up there all my life. I would like to do something I enjoy and so hopefully my studies will get me to that point. =] Nice to meet all of you!

Hello Everyone,

I'm a 35 year old male, born and raised in the Greater Cleveland area. I've been messing around with computers since I was 16. I wrote my first bubble sort on a old Wang system in high school and things just took off from there.

I am married to a wonderful woman who is my soulmate, best friend, and a hot little number to boot . We have a daughter who is 9 and she is just starting to realize that the computers that Dad works on are cool.

I'm currently employed as the Network Admin for a Group Life Insurance Company.

I'm an avid gamer by heart, and you can catch me online playing Quake3Arena or on open BattleNet playing Diablo2 on a daily(Well.. most of the time if the wife lets me ) basis. My alias is Spid32.

Gaming (Doom in particular) is what really got me interested in the network aspect of computing, and I still host LAN parties every other month or so at my house. It's a blast!! Yes, I am still very much a kid at heart

I also enjoy building / flying RC model airplanes and reading Terry Brooks fantasy novels.

I have a Bachelors in Computer Science. I completed my Network+ and MCSE 4.0 certification last year, and I began studying for the MCSE 2000 track earlier this month.

Good luck to everyone pursuing certification!!

O.K. I'll give this a try too.
I am from St. Paul MN and next week will be 38. My wife and I (and 2 children) own a ballet school in Kiel, Germany. (Who knows it just happened) We have about 260 students, a couple of them are promising. We decided it is time for a change (as theater people we can't get out of the traveling habit.) So we sold the school and are looking for work in America ( I have an interesting offer from Wendy's)
Anyway, after a great but short (20+ years) career on the stage it is time to change my hobby into a career.

Like someone said before me my cert may be paper but I mean to turn it into pasteboard before long.

Very interesting to see everyones life adventures. I thought mine was interesting but some of you deserve some credit.

My name is Rene, I am a 29 year old male.
After obtaining my BA in Economics and finance I took the first job I could get. Doing auto accident claims, after two years I realized that I wanted to be in the financial field, but there was no way for me to compete with the recent college grads.

I was stuck in the insurance business, so I decieded to start my MBA in finace so I could change careers. I took a class call MIS(Management Info. Systems), this changed my whole view on life. Got hooked on how amazing computers were.

I became friends with the two IT guys in my company and when I knew one of them was leaving I took a semester off from MBA classes and self studyied the MCSE 4.0 with a little help from VIAGRAFIX CDrom tuturials, CBT, NETG, and transcenders.

Got my paper MCSE and got the position in my company supporting the network for all of NY offices. (Great start for a beginner).

Recently got my CCNA using Keystone system CDrom tuturials and transcender and have already started my WIN2K studies with Keystone video tuturials and transcenders.

Oh yeah, I have two classes left to complete my MBA in finance, but I believe(because I love it) that I will stick with the computer networking after I complete the MBA.

I am currently looking for a different job and have the opportunity to wait at my present company until I find what I want. (Network LAN/WAN admin)

Good luck to you all.

Okay, my turn!

First off I am must say that I am glad to have found this forum. I'm from Houston, and I've been looking for some study partners and/or peers and have had no luck! It seems that this is a lonely field in my town. But in any case...

I am a 27 year Entrepreneurial Drop-Out. It all began actually early on. While in high school I worked for an entreprenuer who had his own company and I was impressed by his lifestyle. Little did I know at that time that it would have such an impact on me. In my junior and senior year I worked for a CPA firm owned by five partners, also and entrepreneurial venture. I studied accounting at the Uni. for three years while launching three unsuccessful startups. Two classmates from overseas, engineering majors, owned a local video store to support them while in school, offered the business to me when they graduated. Of course my entreprenuerial heart accepted. I had the store for about three years each year doing worse than the previous until I found myself working 7/72 per week for what amounted to $5.00/hr w/o benefits. So I sold the business and turned to the want ads. I found a young company in the auto industry coming to Houston for the first time and thought hey, why not be a part of a successful new venture since I haven't had any luck on my own. I became a Sales Consultant. One day, during small talk with a customer, he mentioned that he had sold cars for 20 years and was now retiring to a double-wide mobile home and a used Ford Ranger which I sold him. Now, this is no slam on him, Ford, Double-wide's, or anything more than that not being my IDEAL retirement. Was is it, you ask? I don't know, I only know what it isn't.

I struck out on yet another start-up, and purchased a Compaq Armada, my first computer, a laptop. I began to play around with MS Office to handle all of my bus. comm. needs. I began to build Access databases with the wizard and later customize them. Hey, I had a toy, that kept me up ALL night. My girlfriend griped about competing against my stupid computer. One day I wanted to back up my 2gig hard drive so I bought a box of floppies. I don't think I have to say more about humble beginnings. I had no IDEA! This is the real laugh. When the system prompted for about 2000 floppies and I only had 50, I decided to erase some un-needed files. So I went to the c drive and the windows folders and if I double clicked on a file and it didn't open, (in ms office since thats all I had installed), I assumed I didn't need it. After staying up all night going through this tedious task and ignoring the prompts about the files possibly being needed since they wouldn't open, I went to sleep. The next morning, my system wouldn't start up.

Boy, have I come a long way in three years!

In any case, I began to work for KINKO's, and I say it with pride because it's a great company to work for. I was let loose on the branch network and met a fellow MCP and the rest is history.

I will sit the W2K Pro exam next week and will continue to MCSE2000.

I have successfully deployed W2K in a client/server environment for a company and continue to provide support for their network and systems.

The pay is usually in equipment, software, or of the priceless tool, hands-on experience.

I'm also running W2K Server and Pro at home along w/Linux and Novell. But I have decided to make W2K my OS platform of expertise. I figure by the time Windows is completely moved out of the Corporate Computing space I hope to have then retired!

Please feel free to e-me with any helpful tips and resources, and I will no doubt keep you all posted on my success throughout the exams.

Sorry so long, but this is the first time I've been able to actually tell this story and it feels good.

After about five times I think I'll have it down to a short version.

X_NoDE!
