Author Win2k Question

2000-09-10, 4:09 am

I have just installed win2k and I noticed that my hard drive LED is always on. I'm wondering... is that normal? I've seen that before running mandrake distribution 6.1 of Linux. Everything seems to be running fine though.
Thanks

all I can say is that the LED is not lit on my 2k advanced server - I take it no hardware changes were made and the LED came on just from installing the os? Can you hear any hard drive noises?

I don't think that the HD led on ALL the Time is normal.

I am running WIndows 2000 Server, and HD led in not all all the time.

I would expect it to be on a lot of time when you use you computer because HD is used for paging, and if you don't have enough RAM, you may get excessive paging.

well I only have 64 mb of ram it could be paging I suppose. I dont hear it writing though. How does server compare to pro i have that too thinking about installing it.
Ive never ran Nt so Im not familier with how everything works. I looked at task manager and seen alot of proccesses running and I cant diable them.Even if I could I dont know what has to be running. Thats why I got them though so I could start learning.
I know you folks are working hard on other things but I honestly appreciate the help.

I run both Win2K Pro and Server on the same system. Swapab;e hard drive bay. I use the evaluation copies for study. My system only has 64 Meg of RAM. When I run Pro I don't have near the amount of paging as with Server. To confirm that it is a lack of RAM issue set up the following counters in Performance Montior.

PHYSICAL DISK: Avg. Bytes/Transfer.
If the value remains near 4KB most of the time then there is an excessive paging condition. Suggest more RAM.

PHYSICAL DISK: %Disk Time
If the value is a sustained value of 80% or more all the time. A faster hard drive and or controller may be needed.

MEMORY: Pages/sec
If the value is consistantly high this also is an indication more RAM should be added.

SYSTEM: Processor Queue Lenght
If the value exeeds 2 times the number of CPUs on the system, adding RAM will not help, a faster CPU is needed or reduce the number of applications running if possible.

I hope this will help. For me learning and setting up these counters was a good lesson.

You need more RAM, from what it sounds like to me, your system is probably paging quite often... as Windows2k Server "requires" 128 MB ram minimum. A faster way to see if your system is paging quite often is to just open the task manager. (right click on the taskbar and select "task manager") then just add a couple of new columns on the "processes" tab. You'll see one called "page faults" try that and see where you're getting a counter that is constantly "counting"

Hope that helps some,

The only thing that is constantly counting is explorer.exe. I have added some memory so I am up 128Mb. Still the same thing. Im really starting to think that it has something to do with system commander and dual booting. thanks again
