Author getting caught in the certification craze

I would like to comment on this "certification craze" that many people seem to be caught up in. I have been reading and observing a lot of posts on here and it seems that some are borderline obsessed with getting their next certification. Others act like its a race.
Dont get me wrong certification is great. I myself have various ones. One of the first I obtained was my MCSE for the NT track. But in the IT world I quickly realized that I needed to broaden my knowledge, or more specifically, my vendors. Naturally, Microsoft seems to be the most sought after. But nowadays, who isnt an MCP or MCSE? And I see new people come on here and other boards asking for help and where to get started. Some of them have it in there heads that an MCSE will pave the way to fortune. I would like to see more of the experienced people encourage other certifications. From my travels and positions help in IT, I see few networks that run solely NT. My advice, learn the others. How many people certified in Linux or Solaris do you really know? Few maybe. Ironically, being certified in these OS's will usually bring in more $$$ if thats what you are seeking.
How about Novell? They are far from dying as many say. Get those cross certifications, dont put all your eggs in one basket. Especially if Microsoft is the one holding the basket. I believe in the coming years their gap of dominance will shrink.
Now Im not saying this because I am pushing a particular certification, Im just trying to make the people new to the IT industry see that MS isnt the only avenue. The big companies almost always have some flavor of Unix running their primary servers. I have worked with Win 2000, its not a bad product but it cant keep up with a Unix box or in some cases, a Novell server. I dont believe its going to take off like MS is hoping.
Now I know this board has several forums on other certifications, but they are not attracting anywhere near the number they should be. If you want to stand out and get that big job you've been dreaming about you have to know mulitple OS's. Especially some form of Linux.
