Author MCSE Salary Surveys

Comments are invited on MCSE salaries. I think the salaries surveys on MCSE are bogus and is a ploy by Microsoft to promote their products, exams, books etc. In real life companies ask for a university degree for a Network Administrator not MCSE. It is always a degree. Most of the jobs goes to degree applicants and not to persons who just have an MCSE.Also practical experience counts with the degree, but rarely does it counts with MCSE. How can someone earns $70,000 for just MCSE ? In that case it would be a waste to go to a university.

You hit it right on the nose Tigerman. Those people making $70,000+ with just an MCSE usually a years of experience under their belt.

I have a strong feeling that this whole certification "trend" will come to a level in couple of years that it will go no further. A few years ago, if you were certified, you have a very good chance of getting into the IT industry. Now, with so many people trying to jump on the bandwagon, it is going to eventually level out.

The money is there for the MCSEs... what you say is obvious:
you make more money with an MCSE than without
You make more money if you have a college degree than if you don't
Bandwagon? I teach the MCSE track. I see a lot of people come in, but what is the percentage that actually passes all exams at the end?
If it were such an easy feat, then we'd all be MCSEs the way we are all Net+...

Ditto Freak.

Attaining an MCSE isnt a guarantee of 70k/yr. There are some other factors involved like: experience, professionalism, business writing, vendor interaction, etc... Without a doubt, experience is the biggest factor. If one can combine that with an MCSE then one should be able to pick and choose one's place in the industry. In the NYC area, if you are skilled in Exch55 (MCSE or not), then 70k is at the lower end of the scale for that dedicated admin position. If you dont have experience, take a side job/project to get some. At worst, volunteer your services.

If you are not able to market yourself correctly, you will never be able to command your desired salary. I have seen so many resumes that get people kicked to the curb. If you dont know how to write one, have a friend do it. You cant command 70k if you dont get the interview. If you dont know how to present yourself in the interview (professionally, of course), then the potential employer has no reason to put you on. In my opinion, the one thing that gets many tech people sidelined is attitude. Develop your people-relation skills. Fortunately for me, I have a certificate in customer service from my previous job. I had no idea that it would serve me so well in the IT industry. I make it a point to highlight it on my resume. It has become one of my main differentiators. Employers hate cranky, arrogant staff members. I know that I do. For example, when I left my last job and I sent out my goodbye email to my entire contact list, I had three job offers on the spot. Not because I was a guru but rather that i didnt treat people like sh*t in the process of doing my job. On a personal note, when I come across arrogant IT people, I realize that is one less person that I have to worry about as I climb the IT ladder.

Bottomline, the jobs are there to be filled. One has to be able to differentiate one's self from the growing pack of MCSEs. Those who do, will be paid accordingly.
