Author Evaluation or Academic Version of Windows 2000 Professional?

2000-10-11, 1:37 am

I'm getting started towards the MCSE, and am having some trouble getting a hold of Windows 2000 Professional. Does anybody know of a how to get an evaluation copy? Buying the full version would cost around $250, which wouldn't be worth it for me, since I primarily use *nix anyway. I'm also open to buying an academic version, but I'm yet to see one that costs much less.

Unless you borrow a copy from someone else (we don't pirate software because it is bad), you are going to have to buy it.

If I am correct, Microsoft does not provide "evaluation" copies of it's operating system(s). At least I have never heard about it or seen it. They will sometime offer demos/evaluation copies of certain applications like Exchange, but not the OS. Check the home page of ExamNotes for the 120-day copy of Windows 2000 Advance Server.

I know a while back they use to provide a 120-day copy of NT when you purchased their MCSE study guide/kits (it was the big core study kit that cost about $200 plus), but I haven't seen that in a LONG time.

I work in the academic setting and the prices are really no different than a regular purchase. Academic institutions save money by being tax exempt to some extent. So you are looking at $249 for the full version and about $169 for a upgrade.

If you are studying for your MCSE, it would be a good investment if you can afford it. There is no law that says that you cannot have a Linux system next to a Windows system:-)

I got free evaluation copies of 2000 pro and advanced server from the microsoft website a month or so back to help with my studies. www.microsoft.com/uk/preview/post-release.htm

I live in the uk, maybe this is not available in the us??

It is only offered in the UK. Bummer. Maybe there is hope for us poor US citizens....

Microsoft does supply evaluation versions of 2000 Professional and Advanced Server. I have both the evaluation (7 copies now) and the full versions. I am currently finishing the MCSE classes and beginning to start 70-210 and also attend a "Microsoft Learning Center." I purchased the full oem version of 2000 professional from www.buycheapsoftware.com for $149 a while back. Don't spend the $250-$350 dollars that I have seen it advertised as. Drop me an email if you have any other questions! Good luck everybody!

Thanks for the info everyone. I'll check out that M$ link and see if I can get them to ship it here. I already have evaluation copies of Server and Advanced server as well as a beta copy of Professional, so these would be enough to get by if I need to. Also, I could probably go in early to one of my classes at the college to play around with Profeshional. I'm only working part time, so $250 is a lot to me. I could buy a hell of a lot of RAM with that $$$ anyway

Not to anger or flame.

But ccieToBe is going to be a classic case of a "Paper MCSE" if you don't use it and work with it why be certified on it. If you use and work with *nix and want a certification then certify on Linux or Unix.
Red Hat offers a real hard certification program - HANDS ON TEST. ISP and security focused companies are falling over themselves for unix admin/engineers

Lawrencej, I can see how you'd see it that way without knowing more about my situation.

I've been playing around with various forms of 2000 Server since since it was in late beta. I'm lacking on 2000 Professional experience, but as I'm sure you know, if someone knows Server, they know Professional. I'm still a fairly green with *nix, so I'm not going to go for any related certs until I gain more knowledge in that area.

At work I probably won't get any 2000 experience. NT4 is on the main server (I'm replacing it with Linux) and most of the PCs run 98. I'm planing on starting a technology consulting company and ISP in January, so I should get a lot of hands on with that.

What's NSNS?
