How can I use and learn Proxy on one machine only ?

I certainly wont be going to buy another computer just to learn some sofware !!

Why not buy another machine just to try out software? IMHO, this is a profession where you/I/we will be constantly learning new technologies, so you wouldn't necesarilly have to think of it as an investment in Proxy only.

Also, you only have one PC, right? Did you build it or buy it? You can build a PC dirt cheap (remember, you don't need the latest and greatest for this. You don't even need close), and you get THAT experience too.

I have two Pentium 233 systems that are strictly for wrecking, fixing and learning. That way I'm not taking my every-day use PC down when I do something wrong.

You CAN install Proxy with just one PC (modem and NIC, or two NICs), but I would suggest picking up or building a junker. You won't regret it!

do exactly as moondog says. i too have a "little" machine that i am using for NT4. it's just a p233 with 128 RAM. does everything i need to do with NT and Proxy. take a look at the auctions online. look at the "second-hand" computer shops. you should be able to pick up something like that for just a few bills i'd assume. get a nic in it and a x-over cable so you won't need a hub until you add another machine to the network. you'll appreciate it for more issues as they arise down the road.

even if you don't pick up another machine, you should install proxy just to get some experience with the interface and to see in which screen you do what.

good luck.

i don't think Proxy will run on Win2k Pro but it will run on Win2k Server. you need a patch though. it's at www.microsoft.com/proxy.

maybe it will work on pro though. if you want to try it and report back here, i think a lot of us would be interested. i just read the readme on it and it doesn't say that you NEED to install on server... unless i missed it.

good luck.

Hey zEpS,
I have a question about your setup of proxy server on NT server with 2 NIC cards. One to your private network and the other NIC to your cable modem. If I understand you right that is how you are setup. How did you get around not having a static IP for your cable modem NIC. I tried to setup my NT Server in the same manner and Proxy would not work. Do you have a router between your cable modem and your NIC? Any feedback with how you did it would be great. Thank in Advance

Crowmag,
I'm not sure that can be done without something to convert a dynamic IP to a static IP, if such a thing exists. In most (I won't say all; I could be wrong) cases, a static, external IP address is necessary for Prox2 to function.
Your cable modem is almost functioning like a DHCP server, which would be hidden by the proxy on your internal network. A proxy should be on the outside of a network, with only a firewall outside of it (if you are not going to use its native firewall capabilities...).
I am sure that you could find a way for Proxy to recognize dynamic addresses, but would you really want it to accept every address that is assigned to the external NIC? Wouldn't that pose a security issue?
It is definately worth checking out, but I think it would cause more issues than it would be worth. You might want to use your modem and...
What about using your ISP's default gateway for the IP address for the external NIC?

Hi HAL
You can also run VMWARE which allows you to run 2 OSs at the same time. I don't mean dual boot, but 2 OSs run at the same time on the same machine, basically using 2 shells, and one can be a client of the other.
Your machine will take a hit from a HW Performance point of view, but it could save you beaucoup bucks
