Author Free Points... the basics.

Ok, to any of you who have studied for and taken Microsoft exams, you know that there are some "gimmie" questions. Simple, common sense type of topics that anyone who has done minimal reading should be able to pick up on, and exploit to help their score.

So, what does everybody feel are the "Free points" type of topics in Proxy? I've got a few to start the list...

(This is just out of boredom and noticing certain things on practice tests that don't really challenge anyone, yet can trip them up if they don't think )

1. Locallat.txt is LOCAL LAT. It works with the MSPLAT.txt that is downloaded from the proxy server. Locallat = your custom lat. Options on your car.. or something

2. Cache considerations: 100mb +(users/2)mb. Simple, easy, and a freebie. Shame on you if you miss it.

3. Subnetting... SEEMS tricky, until you learn the math. Freak's guide makes it pretty clear, and the fact that you can use the calculator on your test makes it even easier. If you get one or two on this, you should be able to pull it off.

4. For some reason, I've seen a couple of questions on practice tests asking "what is the binary equivalent of ..." and a number, like 444. If this is on the actual exam... I'll take it as a freebie. Calculator has a tab to change decimal to binary, you don't even have to think.

5. Performance monitor! Hello again, I've missed you so, though you've been on my last 3 exams...

Come on people. diskperf -Y. It's been on practice exams, it's been on every MS exam... know it by now

6. Licenses. ONE PER PROXY SERVER. That's it. 10 proxy servers? 10 licenses. 20 proxy servers with 42000 users? 20 licenses! (I know, 42000 users on 20 proxy servers doesn't sound right...)

...add to the list!

I'd have to agree with you about Freak's subnetting guide. I was lost on that whole topic, about to pray I don't get any subnetting questions on my exam, when I finally read Freak's guide. I'm not saying I have it down now, but it makes total sense to me, I'll be able to get through it if it comes up on my exam. Thanks Freak, and anyone who doesn't have it yet, get it. If I can understand it, anyone can.

Ok I know this one is not a proxy thing but what the hell:

Ok here is an easy way to spot the class of an IP Address (assuming you cant remember the break points)

ok consider this, what class IP is this 156.25.26.179?

Easy take the 1st octet number = 158

ok in binary the 1st octet is made up by (ignore the | they are there for clarity) 128|64|32I16|8|4|2|1

So now we have 158 in binary is 10|01|11|10 Notice the 1st 2 didgits are 10 = Class B

consider 96.36.45.156, ok 96 in binary = 01|10|00|00 notice the 1st 2 digits are 01 = Class A address.

This is how it works:

Class A = 00-01
Class B = 01
Class C = 11

so if your 1st octet is lets say 207 the it is a class C address since 207 > 128+64

Hopoe this helps all you people out there who have problems remembering all these types of things.

Thanks for your feedback. I am happy to see the guide was helpful to you. Your positive remarks made my day!

Freak:

The best part of the subnet guide is the little table:

128|64_|32_|16_|8__|4__|2__|1_
_| Bit Value
---|192|224|240|248|252|254|255| Subnet Mask
---|2__|6__|14_|30_|62_|126|254| # of Subnets

I strongly encourage everyone to get a look at the guide, copy the table down, and put it on your pre-test regurgitation (when you sit down and immediately start writing everything you know on your practice paper to help you in the test...)
