You use an IMAP client to delete a message. Can you recover it from Outlook?

Troytec answer: Yes however you must use an IMAP client configuration to recover if IMAP deleted it.

I would have thought that the answer to this question would be NO?

Please could someone enlighten me....

Ok THOR I have looked through the Sybex Exchange 5.5 Ed.3 "Bible" and on page 212 Table 6.4 Messaging features of MS Outlook I found this;

Quote:"Retreive deleted items: Users can retreive deleted items from their mailboxes through the Recover Deleted items command in MS Outlook 8.03(or later). Recoverd mailbox items are placed in the Deleted Items folder. This funtionality is made possible by the Exchange Information Store and is configured through the Private IS and indavidual mailboxes."

I hope this helps, I can't find anything that explains why at the moment but I'm sure I will.

Thanks ...!
I know that deleted items can be retrieved using Outlook... but the catch here is if you use an IMAP client (Not Outlook) to delete them then can you use Outlook to retrieve them?

P.s Thanks for the info that you forwarded on to me... sorry I have not had time to reply but been locked away in a small room study for this pesky exam....!!

NP Thor,

Ok what is IMAP4? Answer: It is basically POP3 with a few more options. Since IMAP4 has the ability to access multiple folders(other than the Inbox).

Ok then so what IMAP4 clients are there? well Outlook 8.03+, Outlook Express and Internet enabled email applications (Ref. Sybex Exchange 5.5 Ed.3 page 360-362)

Found this on the MS Documents site: http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/e...elp/default.asp

IMAP4 enables clients to access and manipulate unencrypted messages stored within the users' private and public folders on a Microsoft Exchange Server computer. All third-party e-mail clients that support IMAP4 (RFC 2060) can be used to connect to a Microsoft Exchange Server computer and access messages. To send outbound messages from Microsoft Exchange Server, IMAP4 e-mail clients can use the Internet Mail Service or any other SMTP server.

IMAP4 works in a similar way as POP3. When IMAP4 is used to access messages, the client submits requests to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer. When an IMAP4 client sends a message, the Internet Mail Service routes messages to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer to other SMTP hosts, depending on the recipient's address. (definate case of Da-Ja-Vue here).

Hmmm can't seem to find a definative answer for it. Soz Thor

Mind you if you delete any msg from the public folder(s) where in gods name can you recover it from(BTW I have Exchange here and I have tried to do this and guess what NO YOU CANNOT RECOVER the msg(s). BUT if you delete them from a mailbox or personal folders then yes you can. So IMHO the question SUCKS

Good Luck.....!
It definitely is of some consolation that someone else is going through this at the same time.... The problem is when I get this I have to do IEAK5 before the 28th Feb to get +I status before they drop it ... and from what I hear that is a monster.

Why on earth do IEAK5?? do Proxy its a peice of cake!!!

2001-02-07, 12:48 pm

Already caned Proxy so IEAK5 was the only logical one left... Here is what I have done... if there is a better one to do than IEAK5 please advise.!

Workstation, Server, Ess, Enterprise

TCP/IP
Proxy 2.0
IIS 4.0

Doing Exchange obviously and then????

2001-02-07, 12:55 pm

Man your a Cert nut!!! what is left?? hmmmmm oh yes SQL 7.0 (Dont even think about it),. SMS(Definate no no in 3 weeks), oh well IEAK5 it is since you have the IIS & TCP/IP.

Good Luck, Do you really need the MCSE+I cert? Why not just concentrate on the Win2K 240 + 219/20 exams instead?

Thought I would just do it for lack of anyhting else to do really....! I used to work in the NT world but currently I work as an SAP consultant in London.

I will be turning my attention to WIN2K after June when I finish the 2 courses left on Bachelor of Commerce degree....!

I have found that while living in London it is the perfect opportunity to study as there is nothing else to do (Originally from South Africa), So I am studying as much as I can while I am here before I go to Aus - as I can tell you I will be too busy Surfing and playing golf to study... !

Later... So I am going to attempt IEAK5 it looks like ... that is if my brain can decompose Exchange......!
