Could I use a book for Netware 4.11 as a study guide for the Netware 5 exam? Had a buddy who gave me a Netware 4.11 study guide and was wondering if it would do any good.
Thanks

NO!

I don't know that I'd rely on it to pass the 5 exam. But it could be helpful or provide additional info on certain topics that are still part of Netware.

I'd use it as a supplement.

Thanks, that is what I was basically looking for as an answer. Just like Microsoft products they update but only certain things change. That is what I was wondering here if 4.11 would help me get an idea of the file system, etc until I get my Netware 5 book. Thanks again DemiGod.

Did limsam help in anyway??
NO!

Next time please don't even respond if that is all you can provide for help. At least you could have told me why not instead of being so rude!

If the 4.11 book is the Student Manual Admin course - I think revision 2.0 that covered IntraNetWare and NDS then yes. I did the 5.0 Admin. First off if your just going for a CNA and have no immediate desire to plan for a CNE then you could just do the 4.11 Admin course - its not even slated for extinction yet. The 5.0 Admin is replaced by the 5.1 Admin soon (and this was extended).

Download this PDF for CNA: http://www.novell.com/education/cer...cna/cnaprog.pdf That will sort it out for you.

NetWare 5 at major differences over 4.11 was NDS version 8 and the Java based installation and ConsoleOne management tools.
Neither of those are really covered in the 5.0 test (left my book at work so I am not sure). The IntraNetWare/4.11/5.0 Admin course is a roots NDS class and concentrates on the Directory, file system, and Admin responsibilities. I would spend a few bones on some exam simulation software but I believe you could sit the 5.0 test with the 4.11 book. I dont doubt that Novell throws at least some technology per upgrade into the Admin test, but the CNA responsibilities are still pretty static from 4.11/NDS to present.

Man, I do not understand how I can be rude by giving a correct and terse reply! You asked me whether you can pass NW5 exams based on NW4.x book. As far as the exam is concerned, the clear, terse reply is " No.. If you do so, you will FAIL, unless you are working with NW5 already. Yoy did not ask whether you want to gain knowledge or get some introduction.

The following is not targetted at you, but it shows how a miscommunication lead.
Moral: Do not give advice to a buffalo. It wastes your time and makes the buffalo angry.

As dheinsdorf states, 4.11 can prepare you for some on the exams. Most of my hands-on is currently with 4.11, and things like NDS manager, timesynch, and NWAdmin are still similar enough to 5.1 for me to use some of that experience (and I would expect some of the book info) for learning.

Before you spend a bunch of money on books try auctions like Ebay. I bought several Netware 5 and 5.1 books there for really cheap. A couple were slightly out of date for some of the newer exams (like Integrating NT with E-directory), but I supplemented the books with internet research.

I agree that limsam was not intending to be rude. That's the problem with posting, you lose a lot in the communication without the vocal tone, body language, and facial expressions. So a short answer can come across as sharp and rude. That's why I always write long, blathering posts that go on and on, so people think I a wonderful coversationalist.

First off limsam has always been a nice guy. Over the last year I have never seen him post anything negative, and usually he's the first one to post congrats when anyone makes the grade - heck he's got tulips for an avatar BUT I believe limsam has been accruing plenty of Novell knowledge (he got his CNE before me), bkone is just starting out and we are all here to benefit from others experience. Telling bkone "no" answered the question (and I feel "yes" is the answer) but now he still has to figure out why not - and he's wasnt in posession of that answer, plus he has to figure out what to do instead. Not cool. I had a volunteer sysop do the same thing to me on the NDS support forum. I posted something like: Your an MCNE, a representative for the voice of Novell who is here because your talented in this matter and you can only give me half a sentence and still not answer my question - if you dont know just say so but dont blow me off. Anyhow another sysop gave me a good answer. Novell's got enough problems without alienating people. Same goes here, were lucky for every new guy/gal that decides to learn NetWare, we need all the troups we can get.

I have a coworked trying to decide on the 4.11 or 5.1 CNA. Bkone, I would suggest in final that you do 5.1 and not put any resources into 4.11. While still a CNA, a 4.11 CNA is somewhat a waste of personal resources and cert expansion. I think all the CNA tests are going to be so similar that it wont matter anyhow. But for any differences - assuming you will setup a 5.1 box at home, get a 5.1 CNA - you can easily wrench a 4.11 box but visa-versa wont be as easy.

Sounds like your into 5.1 anyway. Dont even mess with 5.0. 5.1 is just way beyond anything older and your time into learning it will pay off way bigger.

Ya dont want to get too far back on the learning curve.

I thank you all for your responses. Maybe I did take limsam post the wrong way but I saw NO! alot different then no! To me that makes no alot more significant. I am not going to beat a dead horse, thanks for all the post, they were very beneficial. I have done some research and think I will attempt the 5.0 exam. I prefer adaptive testing over the non-adaptive exams any day. Once and if I successfully pass the 50-639 exam I will look into the upgrade to 6.0.
Novell is pretty confusing at first, I think alot has to do with not really heard of unless you work in an enviroment that has a Novell product running. Well I thank all of you for your replies and you will more than likely see me around this board for some time with questions. Thanks again.
