Asking which is better between Microsoft and Novell is dangerous ground.... for a couple of reasons. Number one, it is likely to start a flame war, and the moderators won't think too highly of that. Number two....... it's a lot like that old Chevy vs. Ford thing. Everybody has a preference, and most people cannot be swayed to see the other side. I am an MCSE and a CNE. I work with both. I acknowledge pluses and minuses with both of them. Technology-wise, they again have positives and negatives. If you are starting to study the Novell track, especially after being an MCSE, you will have to "unlearn" a few things to understand some of the concepts, but then they aren't all that dis-similar in some respects. Microsoft Active Directory is a similar if not rudementary version of Novell's NDS. The list goes on and on. My best advice is approach with an open mind, absorb the information that is pertinent to you, and then you can better make a decision on which one is "right" for you.

Very difficult to answer!

Either company had it own good piece on the market!

MS is user-friendly and popular with home.
Novell is business type with excellent NOS.

until the arrival of win2000, it is Novell!.

After win2000? We need more time to see Win2000 in action.

great answer mikeman...

i personally like Novell NetWare servers over MS Windows (NT or 2000). and AD in my opinion is a blatent rip-off or "wannabe" version of NDS. Novell has the best Directory on the market but the sad truth is that all the people out there who get to make decisions don't know this and go with MS. for the remaining 2-weeks at my current job i will be working with both AD and NDS. my new job has NDS and NT but it's gunna make me cry to help migrate it all to AD .

Comparing NDS and AD is comparing the best student to an average student is a class.

In real life, good marketing will make the average student look smarter than the really smart student.

IMHO since I'm certified in both camps and having rather a lot of experience with both I'd have to conclude Microsoft screwd up in the AD compared with Novell's NDS. Netware is easier to manage, faster and is less prone to failures/reboots. Heck I have seen servers that have never been rebooted for over 2 years, I'd like to see an NT4/5 server do that.

With regards to the marketing Novell has always lagged behind Microsoft's, Novell is for File/Print Serving, Windows 2K & XP are desktop and Application platforms.

Having had experience of deploying vast numbers of desktops and servers both as an engineer and a Project Manager over the past 7 years. When it comes to the server side Novell wins for File/print. NT, be it NT4 or 2K wins in the application platform market. However; most people like GUI interfaces so the masses go for Windows/Linux over Novell's Netware. Novell have tried to use a GUI and IMHO failed. ConsoleOne is a complete mess and its overhead kills some powerfull servers.

So all in all My vote is;
Novell: - File/Print
Microsoft: - Application Platform

You may agree you may disagree bottm line is "Who cares?"

I agree with you Yeti...

M$ have taken the engineering out of being an engineer whereas Novell have kept it (My thoughts anyway)

I haven't taken my CNA, or finished my MCSA yet but I am taking a class in Novell 5 right now and studying to become a CNA. I agree with the fact that Microsoft is better for application based servers and Novell for file and print sharing. Novell has been at it a lot longer and still own 40% or so of the networking market. To say who is better is again not really a valid question. really in the end what you need to be aware of is that both of them are trying to sell a product. While your studying for these certs that still the bottom line and they will both try to persuade you to see there version is better than the other. I am going for both MCSA and CNA just because I feel if you get both whichever environment is implemented where you apply for employment it won't matter and since they combine for probably about 75%-80% of the market share you have plenty of options. Just my two cents.

i think i agree on the application part of your statements, guys. and subscribe whole-heartedly to the file/print aspect... but, one must take into consideration, is NetWare not as "good" a app server simply because there aren't as many apps available for it? (which is another reason why Novell's losing ground. i've heard or read somewhere that the NetWare Developer Tools are harder to use than that of M$.)

the only kind of app serving we're doing here is SQL, which is running on 2000. i have a friend, however, who is using the SQL that ships inside of NetWare for his DB.

you guys with more experience with app servers, what say ye?
