Losing network connection
|
|
|
| Hello,
We have several PCs that always lose network connections. We use Netware 5 and the workstations are Win98 or WinNT. Once they login to Netware network system, they can access all the shared files on the shared drive, but after a couple hours, they cann't find the shared drive or printers. The only way is to restart the pc, then all the network connectons are back. Can anybody give me some ideas? Thanks.

| Make sure Network cables are not wrapped around power cables or other sources of EMI.
Also update clients to the latest version.
Change Network cables.
Good luck. | |

| Network cabling or EMI certainly seems to be the most logical possibility. Make sure the cables aren't run directly over lights or power equipment in the ceiling. If you have several hubs or switches you may want to use trace the cables from the patch panel to the hub/switch to see if all the users with the problem are hooked up to the same switch. If you have users that haven't had a problem find out what switch ports they are using and hook the problem computers to the "known good" ports and see if it recurs (the old switcheroo). If disconnection still occurs to the same workstation, even in a known good port, it is likely your cabling.
In any study I do the statement that 80 to 90% of network-related problems are due to cabling issues has some good basis.

| There are a couple of TIDs reagding these.
Goto Novell's support site at support.novell.com and read them as well.

| U can always start with basic and work your way up. If u don't see any direction from the error message or ... other
Physical hardware? Check all cable, NIC, switch ...
Software? Workstation, OS, ..
then NetWare.
Try to isolate and divide into small piece.

I had the same problem at work but it was due to high server utilization caused by NDPS printing. Had to get rid of the NDPS.
However, many other things could be the cause of your problem.

| We had a very similar problem over here. After 2 or 3 servers and ups's were moved around one day we saw a number of dropped connections. The patch cables from the servers to the switches were draped over the ups'. The patch cables were physically routed another way to minimize the ups's EMI. Since then there has been a dramatic improvement. |
