Novell 5.0 Test Drive Kit fails to install
|

| It loads everything fine up to where it needs to start GUI portion of install.
I keep getting error stating that it is an incorrect drive path (I am loading from CD rom) when I try to choose differant path it makes no differance. It pops up with a window stating that Z:\sys\system\tar.nlm, the next few are the java files not found etc..
If I choose to continue I will get about 30 more messages like that and then it will load what it can and stop. Not starting the GUI portion at all.
My PArtition is 200mb and I tried not to edit the sys volume size and with a customized size (3GB) it still did not make a differance.
Oh yea I tried to restart the install from NWCONFIG (Install sys files etc...)but the same responses.
Possibly bad media???
Thanks in advance | |

| do you have a DOS partition?
as well as free unformatted space in the drive?
| fizz85 2001-08-22, 10:51 pm |
| yes I do I have 200mb (I know you only need 50)it is a dos 6.2 partition. The rest is unformatted space. I am gonna try to write zero to whole drive when I get a chance to see if that makes a differance. | |

Do you mean you wiped out the entire drive and tried to install? If not, I recommend trying that. Make sure all your hardware is supported and the CD you're installing from isn't scratched.

| Yep did that still did not work. I figured out the problem it is a COMPAQ computer. I think they have some set of instructions in the bios to prevent the loading of an OS other than the OEM that came with it. I know Gateway does it so that is probably what it is. I am going to try and flash the bios but I don't think it will work.
Oh yea
New Cdrom disks, tried to use full version 5.1 failed at file copy also so...
Last hope is to flash bios I will let you know.

| That's too bad. Other then the BIOS the hardware specs sound ideal for a practice server.
As I'm sure you know Compaqs are infamous for being extremely proprietary. The only Compaq I'd ever buy is an Alpha system.

| My search for the Crapaq bios upate failed.
I got an idea. I have 2 computers I will remove the HD from the Crapaq and place it in my other computer (built from scratch)unhook my other HD so my other novell HD can be primary and just load it from there. Then I will switch the HD back to my Crapaq and pray that it will work.
Too much work but what the hell it is a challenge I will overcome. LOL
I will keep you posted. I am working the late shift but I should get to it tomorrow afternoon.
Thanks for your help so far.

| Interesting idea. I'd also recommend keeping as much hardware as possible the same. If possible, put any removable Compaq hardware in the built from scratch PC and take out any removable hardware that was origonally in the built from scratch PC. Also, I hope both PCs have the same generation processor. I don't know what NetWare does, but most OSs will scream at you if you try switching processor generations post install. | |

| we shall see I am going to try now. Man I hope this works. | |

| Like I should have done in the first place I went to the Novell site and found out that the Compaq Presario does not support networking (as a server) so.. that ends it.
Thanks for your help. | |

| Too bad. Are you going to try installing NetWare on the custom built PC? | |
| fizz85 2001-08-24, 8:18 pm |
| Naw I have too much valable info on there.
When I did the HD switch mumbo jumbo I kept getting memory errors (not enough) even though I have 512mbs. I tried to rem the dos memory managers without avail. I also tried to switch out the mem modules with the compaq but even though it installed past that point during the compaq install it would not on the other one. I am stumped on that one. So until I figure that one out I will leave it alone.
This does not resolve problem:

I am probably gonna buy a cheap 10gig hd and augment my custom built pc with it and play some more. I don't mind spending the money because I have a good chance at getting a really good job as a Netware admin and I just wanted to brush up on application launcher and a few other things I don't get to play with here at work (I am admin for 5.1) because we have so few users (20) and nothing ever goes wrong. Damn Novell for being so stable.

| I went out and bought a used 3gig HD and it installed no problem. I did not use the boot from cdrom option just the INSTALL.BAT from the DOS prompt. It did not work the first time but it did now. Maybe the OS did not like my HD.
Thanks for all your help and ideas ccieToBe.

No problem.
Its been pretty common for me to see the file copy errors, almost exactly the same as you ran into from having to select which CDROM drivers to use to use prior to the file copy in the non gui portion.
You hanging your cd off the same channel as the HD? ANY time I tried to install 5.0 or 5.1 from an IDE cd drive I would get that error 50% of the time and then have to select the opposite driver (msdos 6.22 or NetWare). And still sometimes it hit once and re-selecting the path fixes it. Last time was on a 48x Samsung, gave me fits.
I dont think it was anything Novell stated. If merely changing the hard drive helped, then it was a timing issue.
Its like 5.0 not likeing many video cards. AGP is not spec (but it works). Thus having older ATI AGP or PCI cards around is good.
Guess I did miss some good stuff....

Welcome back
Thanks,
Youll also notice that once you get past the troublesome parts of any install that things are usually pretty smooth thereafter. |
