ZfD3 -> Firestarter -> Prometheus

| After my litle dummy spit about the Imaging Process for ZfD3 , it appears this was just the appetizer from Novell.
ZfD3 is just the son of "Fire Starter" , which has cool stuff like PiXiE support instead of Linux reliance.
Fire Starter is just the son of Prometheus, which has cool stuff like good-bye Netware Client!
Prometheus, we apparently prometheus is just a son of a

| chunder is very anxious but hopes there's no added learning curve like there was to get ZfD3 going (going to the point he has it going)... why is chunder speaking in 3rd person?
some thoughts.
quote: Compression of Images. ZENworks Firestarter compresses image files by an average of 40 to 60 percent. As a result, the time you spend deploying these images across the wire will significantly decrease.
why wasn't this in ver 1? Novell has the best file compression out there (at least that i know of)... so, why wasn't it built in? my base image of w2kpro is right about 1 Gig. with some apps added it grows to 1.4 G. this will be so nice.quote: Server-Based Image Multicasting. By initiating a multicast session from the server, you will be able to push ZENworks images to multiple workstations during a single imaging session without visiting individual workstations. As a result, the time and bandwidth required to deploy workstation images to more than one workstation will substantially decrease. In addition, ZENworks Firestarter will automate the usual setup procedures required to perform multiple workstation imaging.
looks to be VERY handy... but i sure hope they will be past the current multicasting issues... page segmentation fault or whatever i and others have gotten. i bailed on the multicast because of it.quote: Advanced Scripting for Imaging. ZENworks Firestarter will enable you to embed advanced imaging commands within imaging policies. For example, in previous versions of ZENworks for Desktops, tasks such as partition manipulation and conditional imaging were available only from the imaging engine's command prompt. ZENworks Firestarter makes these tasks manageable through ConsoleOne.
again, handy. i haven't really used the existing policy based imaging so maybe this will let me...quote: Pre-boot eXecution Environment (PXE) Readiness. This feature will ease the deployment of workstation images by eliminating the need to deploy the ZENworks Imaging Partition. The ZENworks Firestarter PXE integration will be available through a separate enhancement pack, currently code-named ZENworks Firestarter PXE. (See "ZENworks Imaging and PXE.")
i think one of the BIGGEST features i want and the whole reason i opted to NOT put the Linux partition on. i just hope our older NICs support PXE (pixie).
i hope the improved remote control is real too! we don't use the existing RC because it's SOOOO SLOOOOOW! even when you tell it to use the lowest video/color. pcAnywhere is just too much faster.
as far as the rest of the fancy stuff (in Prometheus)... i only hope to find ways to use them all!
did you catch the article about Unicenter/ZENworks? (http://www.novell.com/news/press/ar...07/pr01068.html) interesting... anyone using/used Unicenter? not me.

| In one article it was said the FireStarter remote control was supposed to be close to PCAnywhere.
Multicasting is tough, we use PowerQuests Win32 based (better than the dos/4gw 32bit) powercasting and its hard to get a clean session to all clients. Our Network Engineer consultant said to setup multicast groups. Even with Zen4 it the way to go I am told, ya know, only the clients in the group get the multicast - via the switch.
Its exciting. I think Prometheus is the greek god dude that brought fire from mount. Oly and gave it to man.
I dunno about the marketing on this one though - FireStarter? I want FirePutterOuter.
