I love it when a plan comes apart.

Has anyone been foolish to use an accton 1207d nic for imaging with ZEN3. I can't get the linux drivers for it working no matter what.

Alternatively, if you have set up imaging for an 'unsupported' nic, please show me what your
DEFAULTDRIVER=
statement looks like in your settings.txt

Or any tips . . . .

Cyb,
Why dont ya just yoke the Accton and slap in a 3Com 90x or an Intel Pro100? Of course you probable have a bunch of Acctons and want to make them work. Another excercise in futility eh?

Yes Doug, I probably do have a bunch of accton NICs in place already. Around 30 or more. So it is not a viable solution to replace them - yet.

Someone reading this has to have used a 'non standard' NIC before this??

Try post up this Q on the Novell CNE forum...

This is a very difficult Q to answer, requrired more time and deeper technical guidance..

Good luck..

Good tip Kasor,

But before I go, here is some further depth to the problem.

We have collaborated with a Linux aware colleague, and have found out this much more . .

Upon the 2nd disk in the imaging set not finding any trace of NIC, we are left with a bash# prompt

We don’t have the skill to compile our supposed driver.c into a driver.o However, we have come across a compiled download from Novell that is supposed to be compatible with the imaging’s Linux kernel - it doesn't work - or does it

At the BASH prompt we do the following:

mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
cd /mnt /floppy
insmod rtl8139.o

we then execute a ifconfig on the eth0 and hey presto - its alive.

So what does this mean?

The compiled driver we now have is the correct one for our NIC and Kernel version - but the Novell imaging mechanism doesn't launch it properly.

So the question is now clearer - the answer is not.

Time to get on the CNE forum with Novell for help.

I may post back - this scenario will screw us all at some time I'm sure.

sorry... can't help you. i have been fairly fortunate with the NICs we are using.. all intel.

the newest version of the imaging engine is supposed to be more modular than in the past... meaning that if you can get the module (driver.o file) then you can easily plug that into your boot disks.

however, when i updated all the files on my server, i couldn't do imaging at all and actually back-rev'd my server but continue to use the newer boot media (the CD and some floppies are both working. the CD iso apparently has all the drivers built-in).

i don't know Linux enough to do any compiling... if all the other stuff i am working on wasn't taking sooo damn much time! i am turning into a jack-of-all-trades... MASTER OF NONE!

it was you who emailed me?

and now we're posting to each other on the ZfD3 (novell) forums! we're insane!

message overload! pants on fire! fire pants... bad?

That is a bit strange - shouldn't you be in bed? Its 11am here so it must be about 1am there?

Anyhoo, I patched the imaging engine, and IT'S ALIVE.

(I still screwed if I ever have to compile my own drivers though - the one I'm using was from the NW site)

not 1am... my post was about 6pm my time wednesday. i thought you were 8 hours ahead... maybe no.

good to hear your new imaging stuff worked. let me know if you can do any multicasting.

i think i mentioned it on the novell support forums but i had to back-rev from the imaging patches. but i still use the CD (and floppies for the machines that can't boot from a multi-session CD) from the imaging updates... wacky.
