I thought nwadmin was installed by default. If it's not there, you could always d/l it from Novell's website. Do you mean that you can't run nwadmin at the server? As far as I know, you can't. Most NetWare administration is done from a workstation.

ccieToBe is correct. most administration IS done at the workstation and that is where NWadmin runs. and, IMO, console one is a joke, especially at the server. you're going to want do nearly ALL of your NDS administration (NWadmin) at the workstation and you will do you loading/unloading of NLMs at the server (or with RConsole/RConJ).

ok?

holler if you need further assistance.

NWAdmin is installed by default. You have an .exe file in the \public\win32 directory once you login to the server from a workstation. Need more help, just ask...

Thanks for the help. I'm trying to tech myself Novell and some of the reasource materals I'm using are not that good. Any suggestions. You'll probably see me up here asking some stupid questions so please have mercy. Here is another stupid question. Is there a command line I can use to shut my test server down. In windows you just hit the shut down button. How do I turn my server off? Just unplugg the machine? I got one off those cheap machines that doesn't have an off button.

type "down" at th console. then it's back to the DOS prompt. do what ever you would to a DOS machine at that point.

we're here to help.

I would recommend at the console prompt

Type Down
Type Exit

This will exit you out to a DOS prompt and will unload server.exe completely to avoid any corrupting of files on the server. You also can create .ncf files to do this for you. Let us know if you need help with it.

nw5.1 exits to DOS when typing down. 4.x you need to type exit.

For future reference - since your learning NetWare starting with 5.1, there is also the Management Portal to play with for the future (and somewhat present) management of 5.1+ NetWare. Look into it. https://<serveripaddress>:8009 . My manager avoids it - but I keep telling him "theres plenty of test questions on it". Must mean something?

I am running 4.11 and I don’t know if I would like it to just exit to DOS. Would it still inform you if users have files open like it does now when you type down?

yes. it will tell you who has what open and ask if you're sure that you want to downt the server.

Thanks.

I don't know if I am ever going to get to use 5 or 5.1. We are running an old betreive database and can't move to 5 with out upgrading that and the company does want to pay for it. We might be moving to Win 2000 in the next year. I am unsure what is going to happen. I just want something too...

NW4.11+ is nice and stable. you're not missing tons in 5.x.

however, ADS on Win2k bites! IMHO.

Yes, that would be unfortunate (ADS).

Not missing tons in 5.x? Not unless you concider its main points - eDirectory (NDS 8.x) global scalability and NSS. But Chunder your right - if her co. is moving to ADS thier really not looking at the big picture anyway!

Ok, enlighten me as to what the big picture is.

Also, maybe you guy’s might know something about this. On Vol1, my directory entries are at 86% or 1,247,744 total and 165,803 abailable. I read on Knowledge base that this number is dynaic and I can have up to 16,000,000 on 4.11 and that once it reaches a sertin point that it will allocate for more. Did I understand this right or is there something that I have to do to free up this space? I don’t know if this is important but my disk space is a 52%.

Thanks…

Are you referring to the big picture aa to the Directory Services war and the associated campaigns? NDS vs. ADS? Good vs. Evil? High Technology vs. Conscentual Mass Hallucination?

What utility are you using to get your numbers? NWAdmin, properties viewed from the windows browser service, or? Also I take it this is your main DATA volume, right?

Doug

I am finding this information in NWADMIN under the details>stats of the volume object and yes this is my main Data Vol.

ok, so fine.. we're not global and we're not using NSS (is anyone really? i need to read up on it more.. see where they're at with it).

I WANT FIRESTARTER TOO!

ADS hurts. my brains hurt from ADS. ADS hurts.
