Hes got it set up with novell client, TCP/IP with wins, dns and the like settings.... However we need to get him to log on to our NT network. we put the microsoft client on and made it the primary client but it wont find our DC's.. i know theres a way to do this but i dont remember.. any help?!?!!

| You have to make sure he's apart of your domain. you'll have to create a generic account for him to log into and a computer account on the server. you can do all of that thru networking neighborhood properties. Let me know if you have any other questions. | |

| yeah that is taken care of.. but there is a way to use 1 client for both networks.. we got it to work by loading both clients and then loging into one and cancelling the other but its not very clean any ideas? | |

| Yes there is use the latest NW Client for 5.1, I know it works since I'm using now here connecting to NT4 & 2000 as well as NW 5.1
However I have set it up to be the Primary login... not the MS one...its crap when connecting to DNS NW systems.

| So I can remove the other 2 clients and put on the i believe 3.3 ver of novell client and it will connect to both nt and his netware servers?? he has 3.1 client on it now. | |

| Just install this client and let it deceide what it needs:
Novell Client for Windows NT/2000 Release 7/31/00

| Right, The latest client for NT/2000 is 4.80. you can download it from novell of course. | |

| yep, both NT and Netware, For the NT side, there will be a windows tab, make sure it has the domain name that you want to log into. as long as he has a user account created on the network, he'll be fine. | |

| i don't know if i am following you all correctly but what i understand from the conversation is not correct.
your situation (as i understand it):
your network is NT only (domain). no novell. DHCP? WINS?
laptop is win98. has novell client 3.30 on it (or will). you added Windows Client for MS. it normally ONLY logs into an NDS tree (no NT/Domains). laptop has static ip? static WINS? et al.?
my solution:
novell client 3.3 will NOT connect your workstation to an NT domain. the MS client is needed for that. and, you need to specify the domain that it's connecting to in the client properties. the computer doesn't need an account in the domain if it's win9x, only if it's nt/2000. you WILL need a user account on the Domain for him.
so, by you actually hitting ESC on the keyboard at the Novell Login window, you have said, "i don't want to login to NDS/Novell." That's fine. Then you logon to your domain with his user/pass. but this will not happen unless you specify the domain name in the MS Client Properties Dialog.
barring any other IP connectivity issues, that should fix you up.
let me know if i have missed something... and view the attached screenshot to see if that helps any.

| I dont have anything direct to offer but I was on the other end of the stick - Citrix MetaFrame 1.8\2000 Server using the MS client but mapping home dirs to NW5.
One thing to know (and it may come in handy some day for someone) is that no matter what you read in MS white papers 2000 server, with AD or legacy domain WILL NOT authenticate, sync passwrds, etc in NDS mode.
Meaning if you dont have a Bindery context set on the NetWare side, forget it. GSNW asks for a tree, even in MS verbatim there is no NDS crossover to Novell. You may have a default location profile in your 9x registry thats preventing you (or may) from tweaking client32 gui tabs. For future reference there is old stuff in the 9x registry that will/can hose things.
All I am saying is that after you make client tweaks to get to your MS domain, if it doesnt work when you believe it should, look in the registry.

| I know this one is obvious, but just in case . . .
When you have set up the MS client (and you MUST set it up) to connect to the mileskdomain, make sure the workgroup name is also set to mileskdomain.
Oh yeah, You can ping the server and other PC's right. . . Right? |
