Needs help regarding Zenworks 3

| Hi,
Recently I have installed Zenworks for Desktop 3 onto a Netware 5.1 server. After installation, I installed Netware client onto a Windows 2000 workstation and run the NW Admin from Win32 folder. The program fires up but I could not create any Application object because there isnt any such option inside the create dialog box. Further more, I saw a lot of icons on the NDS tree that have a black question mark inside which only appears after I installed Zenworks onto the server.
Wonder if there is any snap-ins that I need to install or is that something wrong with the installation?
Tried going to Novell Knowledgebase, could not find any identical problem...

We are a Zen2 shop after trouble with Zen3 we didnt have time to work through - so I am going off of 2 year old memories here:
I assume you did the install as Admin or ? with Object create to Root. I Also assume you are using W2K Client32 4.6 or greater. And the Zen post install log available for review at the client was free of errors.
Zen3 AppObjs (I believe) need to be created with ConsoleOne - and you definetely will see unknown objects from NWAdmin. Most Zen3 work is done via ConsoleOne.
There were TIDs on snapin problems with ConsoleOne post Zen3 install - requireing manual copy or something.
The Zen3 readme text on CD covers quite a bit of related problems needing to be addressed post install - as with all Novell prods. the readme's should be heavily scoured, total rule of thumb. I think you answers lie there and in the Zen3 install/quick setup/getting started guide (versus the major Zen3 doc) available at Novell.com's docs site. Aside from that (and this may be in the docs) you may need to run DSRepair and extend the schema (which the install SHOULD do).
Let us know. I think Chunder has lots of Zen3 coverage, but I havnt seen him around here recently. Let us know. Zen3 is quite more involved than Zen2 and really required more reading and tweaking.

YES. ALL work is done in ConsoleOne. (i'm running ZfD3.1). launch ConsoleOne and you'll see... if Z: is mapped to SYS:Public...

| Hey guys, thanks for your replies...
BTW, I installed Zfd2 onto another new server and it works perfectly All the Zenwork-related snap-ins and icons are there and everything is working fine. Another thing is that the installation procedures for Zfd2 seems very much more user-friendly than that of Zfd3.
Is there any features that Zfd3 has that make it really worth going through all the hassle of installing it? As of now, I am pretty happy with Zfd2 but do hope to tackle Zfd3 again soon when it gets more user-friendly..

Yes, there are plenty of features that almost demand Zen3 use. The install is not a hastle so much as encompassing what it has to offer in a production network requires a seasoned NW5.x and Zen2 admin. As for "user friendly", I think there hasnt been nor will be much of that for Novell. Its more like trying to work with ever increasingly powerful products.
Have you got Zen2 remote management functions working? 2 workstations and a server should get you a platform going for Zen3. Theres really nothing not online to keep you from getting all functions working. But to you and anyone using ZenWorks, I suggest making "everything" function on Zen2 first.
Doing that in a test network config is tough. Put Zen2 on a production network and make it all go is pretty brutal. But the results are award winning. Have you done any User or Workstation policy configuration with Zen2 yet? What are you looking to get out of your test setup experience? |
