have any of you used contextless login from Novell? i've only read a tiny bit so far and plan to read more.. but it's always nice to hear from people who are using it.

Haven't heard this for long time since the CNA and Adv Admin test.

This is good for mobile user, however I think NW6 have come out a better functions.

If you still have your CNA book and the adv admin test. It tell you everything u need to know.

Yeah, I remember going over this in the CNA material. The whitebook and Clarke's book both go cover contextless login.

Dood, its a must! Its sooooo easy to setup and push to the clients, and you can say GOODBYE to location profiles or aliases, just type in the username and whammo.

Its a must for any tree with at least 1 5.x server on it. 2 5.x servers is better so you can have redundancy on the catalog that holds the users CX listings.

All you need to set it up is a 5.x box (redundaredunda) and the help file from NWAdmin32.

Lemme know and good to talk at you again.

This is very easy to setup. Go to Coolsolutions on the Novell Websit, http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/Freetools_i_m.html. Download lgncl.zip. The instructions are included in the download.

That solution is good for trees with no 5.x servers in it, i.e. 4.11 which cannot run dscat.nlm. It removes from the centralized management of NDS and places management at the workstation possibly requiring ZenWorks to make registry pokes. It detracts from the users ability to roam also.

Worstly it is a far slower process as the context(s) must be searched, thus the tree searched versus a catalogs on each server which have already dredged all/any user object context data. With a duplicate catalog on each server the fastest server to respond replies.

Using LGNCL there are pruning practices needing to be made to the client registry:

PRUNING
By default, LgnCLW32 will search the entire tree for all occurrences of a username. In some cases this may be an extremely lengthy process requiring several minutes. As a result, the search of the tree can be "pruned" down to specific branches.
To do this:
Go to the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\SOFTWARE
\Novell
\Graphical Login
\NWLGE
\LgnCL
\CxPruning
In this key, create another key that is named exactly the same as the tree. Within this key, create a DWORD type value named exactly the same as the context to be searched. Set the contents of this value to specify the depth of the search 0 = Search this context only. No sub-contexts 0xFFFFFFFF = Search this context and all decendent contexts. Any other value specifies how many levels of sub-contexts should be searched. If no values are defined within this key, no search will be performed for that tree.

--------------------------------------------

I dont think LGNCL is faster or easier, plus I believe there are additional services in 5.x that benefit from running DSCAT (cant remember what they are though).

Thanks,
I think the 5.0 Admin white book has an appendix on the subject.

Like I said, just goto NWAdmin32 help, its all in there. Dont forget to load DSCat.nlm, add it to the autoexec, most importantly from the NDS Cat object, theres a tab where you MUST run the "dredge" to scan the tree and you will see this happen at the console.
Its fun stuff.

Later,

Doug.

P.s. on the page where Ratcliff01 mentioned:
http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/Freetools_i_m.html

a few lines down is a $$ tool to scan server log files for specific problem entries relating to server health. You were looking for something like that right? I think you said you were buying something or another..
