| On a router you'd configure the Aux port with a password and the login command. That's all that's needed before attaching an external modem to it. The Aux port is specifically there for this purpose.
In terms of trying to do this with a 2950 CONS port, I don't know whether or not it's possible (in my mind, I can't see why it wouldn't). Curious, are you wanting to do this for studying purposes or trying to take care of something for your employer? Doesn't matter, but inquiring minds want to know.
Have you looked at the manual (available from cisco.com) for the 2950 yet?

--so far I've googled around, but I'll try the manual next, if I can find it.

| I've looked through some manuals, but that did not help much. So i went into console config and looked at te commands. I found that you cannot have direct modem acess to the console port.
What I am trying to get working is something different though, I wasn't clear enough earlier, I appologize.
I have a modem on each end, the PC and the right before the switch. First of all, what kind of settings should I be using on hyperterminal? Is there anything else I need to do?? thank you again

| Interesting article below:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/76/9.html
According to Cisco, it does look like you can make this fly using the console port, no need for the Aux port which is the common way to do this. The configuration details are included in that link. Looks like there are specific configs for specific modems. They also give the cabling details which looks like it needs to be a normal rollover cable, except 25-pin on the modem end of course.
Looks like fun If you have time, keep us posted. Good stuff....

| okay, so I tried probably every combonation on hyper terminal and nothing.
The console port cannot configure itself for a modem because I get the messages below. Any IDeas?,
I was under the impression that since the modems are digital on the PC/switch sides they would act like a frame relay cloud to IP, and be basically invisible.. So that as long as the hyper terminal settings were correct it should go.. no luck though =/
Switch(config-line)#modem dialin
% Line 0 does not support modem control
Switch(config-line)#modem host
% Line 0 does not support modem control
Switch(config-line)#modem inout
% Line 0 does not support modem control
Switch(config-line)#modem cts
Switch(config-line)#modem cts-Alarm
% Line 0 does not support modem control
Switch(config-line)#

| Your cisco.com link might have gotten botched up somewhere, but I'm glad you got it rolling. Good to know that it can be done. | |

| all there was to d is run a string of characters whil connected to the modem only. in order to reset and adjust the modems settings to accept two way comm... Now I have to figure out how to save those settings so that they dont disapear after the modem is powered down. thanks |
