Hi Guys,

I am currently studying for my semester 4 final having unertaken the academy program over two years at night school. I have worked my backside off over the past two years given that I am trying to study and hold down a full time job at the same time.

I appreciate that getting the CCNA doesn't make you an expert, but I do feel that is is a good base to start a career in networking. I am currently in a support role (mostly servers and systems), but am keen to move into the networking side a bit more, hence the reason why I am on the academy program.

I have read some really negative stuff recently about the CCNA on the google groups, from guys who are CCIE's etc making the CCNA out to be a bit of a joke. They also say that you don't stand a chance of getting a networking job with it.

As mentioned before I know the CCNA doesn't make you an expert, but we all have to start somewhere (even the CCIE's of this world), and can't help but feel that these guys are being overly negative.

Anyway, screw them and what they think, I am simply trying to better myself (no doubt like all my fellow CCNA'rs) and I think I am starting off in the right direction.

What do you guys think?

Cheers

The CCNA is a good certificate to have if you plan to work on Cisco devices. If you want to be more general, then you should look elsewhere.

The CCNA itself doesn't hold that much value, but it is a good stepping stone. You can't really learn the CCNP material without the basics learned through the CCNA. Keep at it and continue to learn.

I can only speak from experience. My CCNA expired in May. Three years and not even one offer. Now I have to pay the bucks for another three years? On the upside though, I have stayed employed from all my other certifications. Will shoot higher this time; shooting for my CCNP after my CCNA this time.

It ain't the CCNA certificate that gets you the job offer, it's the knowledge you have picked up while preparing for it.

I do a lot of interviewing in connection with my job and I am amazed at the number of people with the certification that can't answer super basic networking questions.

The certificate might get you in for the interview but it is the knowledge that gets you a job!

All I can say is that everyone has to start somewhere. You cannot take advanced driving lessons if you can't drive.
Any CCIE who takes the P*ss out of anyone keen to enhance their own career prospects is a to$$er generall n life and shouldn't be listened to.
You make your own luck in this life and you should take it with both hands....

Dubghlase ... did you know that by taking one of the CCNP exams would have renewed your CCNA automatically?
I say this as I didn't know until it was too late and mine ran out December 2004.

Be lucky

Jarvo,
Thanx, yes I knew that, but I felt I needed the refreshing. Other than playing around at home with my routers and switches, I have no real experience. To respond to Yankee, I agree about the knowledge, I was one of three in a class of 13 that passed the CCNA the first try. Three years ago was probably the worst time in IT for hiring. A year or so earlier, I had friends getting offers before even finishing Cisco training. The funny thing now is that I do prepriortary S/W installs and troubleshooting and pull in over 70 a year. The not so funny part is I travel 100% and get 5 days of vacation a year. Yea I know, what a rough life.
I still have hopes for being a network engineer/system administrator one day soon.

WOW !! 5 days off A YEAR ???

Thats illegal over here (I think) how on earth do you manage with only 5 days off..
You deserve a medal mate.

I hear what you say about refreshing as there is a lot more to the new version CCNA. IPT, OSPF, Wireless etc. I am up for the same and then hopefully can get started on CCNP.

Good luck with it all and you never know what is round the corner..!
