Determining routing protocol

| Yet another question from me. I understand all of the routing protocols, but I don't know what to factor in when choosing which to implement in a given network. If you are shown a network diagram, what would you take into consideration when choosing the routing protocol? | |

| I would take into consideration the size and the makeup of the network:
- RIP for small, heterogeneous network
- IGRP for small, Cisco-only network
- OSPF for large, heterogeneous network
- EIGRP for large, Cisco-only network | |
|
| RIP if you are small and/or need to dynamicly route with non-routers (ie firewalls)that dont support OSPF
IGRP not anymore, eigrp just as easy
OSPF larger network that has non cisco
IS-IS ISP
EIGRP larger network that is all cisco (this includes layer 3 switches)
BGP+OSPF real big network
I would not do IGRP or EIGRP in a new environment, if you have them you are fine but if you are starting anew, do OSPF. |
