Cisco 2504 Routers

| I recently purchased 3 2504 routers very cheap to set up my first CCNA Lab.
Knowing they have the token ring ports instead of ethernet (aui) ports, what is the best way to connect them until i can buy some more routers?
Also, what 2500 series routers (there's loads around at the moment) would serve me best in the ccna exam? Am prepared to buy to more plus a switch if necessary.
Thanks in advance!

| I'm not fully versed yet on the Cisco hierarchy, but I purchased 2 2500s which are in the access layer. I would think any routers/switches in the access layer would work the best to start. If you go to Cisco & type in "Access" or "Distribution", you could get an idea where your 2504s fall.
As for the exam, I am not there yet so I wouldn't know the best for CCNA. I would say anything with a command line over a GUI. (2800s have a GUI.)

| Hi,
get a token ring mau from ebay. this is like a hub. of course you will need some cables. as i remember right the routers have a sub d 9 pin female connector. all that stuff should be on ebay very cheap.

I don't think this is true. Maybe you have a VERY old software version?

| Your right OSPF is supported in Cisco IOS version 10.0 and later. Sorry for the bad info. What I should have said was: Only 2500's with IOS version 10.0 and later support OSPF. | |

| Not bad info. There's so much detail of which to keep track with Cisco. | |

| Cheers fellas, been a great help,
i've upgraded the ios to 12.1 and am now using them for frame relay.
As i have 4 router now, is it worth using 2 as DTE and 2 as DCE, or is this beyond the scope of the CCNA? Am running out of things to try.

If anybody is studying with IOS this old I'd strongly suggest upgrading, to at least 12.1 - Its been a while since I did CCNA but I would guess that this is a minimum, possibly even 12.2.
Chief123 - It sounds like you may be ready, if your running out of things to try....With 4 routers there are several things you can do, for instance if you run out of ports try configuring the Aux port as an interface, you can do normal routing etc over this - it's above CCNA but does add flexibility allowing you to add to your network, are you using loopbacks etc to add interfaces and networks?

Just a couple of ideas. | |

| I'm running version 12.3 on a 2501 router and it doesn't support IGRP. | |

| the ccna looks more at the config of 1700's, so in ur test just keep in mind that interfaces are
int f 1
for ethernet, the rest is the same.
this is just a problem i ran into
