Cisco 2501's back to back ???

| I have 2 cisco 2501's connected using a DCE to DTE cable. I have enabled the clock on the DCE side both interfaces come up up. But within about a minute I get up down. Line protocol drops and does not come back up. I have done a show controllers command to verify the DCE, DTE side of the cables are correct. Any ideas?

| Nope. No routing protocol set up. Using HDLC encapsulation as per Cisco's example on thier web site.

| Try using the "no shutdown" command on the interface. Sometimes with older IOS if the clocks are not exactly sync'd they will shut down unexpectedly. | |

| How about some more info on what your trying to do? What's the lab asking you to do?

The routing protocol is irrelevant here, the interfaces on the router are the problem.
As suggested already - post the configs for the relevant interfaces. I suspect a cabling problem, or maybe an supported clock rate, try going for a lower speed.
Its good practice to get in the routine of checking everything as you configure it, in a methodical fashion i.e.
Configure your physical interfaces - Check your interfaces are up, using CDP can you see the other side?
Put your IP addresses on - confirm you can ping the other side.
Turn on routing - Use debugs/show comands and make sure you have adjacencies etc.
Configuring it this way may take a little longer but you always know where the problem is, rather than checking it all at the end and being unsure. | |

| Just a shot in the dark, while all of us are waiting for your config.
I once had an issue similar to that of what you're experiencing right now. Checked everything and it seemed right. Then I went back and checked the "IP add and Subnet Masks" that I'm using and it hit me that I mis-typed the subnet mask for my ppp connectivity. I know it's pretty obvious and simple, but that is what drove me crazy trying to troubleshoot the "line protocol down" issue. But hey, it worked. And like everyone has already said on this thread, your config will help us a lot. |
