hi im kinda new to using cisco routers and what not but i have a 2524 series router and it will not see the ethernet port built in for the life of me. i do the int fa0/0 or int fastethernet 0 commands and they say bad interface specification. ive tried reloading the nvram. i cant seem to get int the extended setup either. the IOS is 9.14

It should see the ethernet port (e0), but it doesn't have a fast ethernet port. Do a "show interfaces" command to see all the interfaces.

Welcome to the board kmikedunn,

JimmyD should have you squared away on the ethernet confusion. INT E0 or INT E0/0 is what you're looking for since those ports are just 10baseT rather than 100baseT.

9.14 for the IOS is ancient (anyone have a date guess?). If you're studying the CCNA, you really should focus on getting that IOS upgraded ASAP. Everything is based on 11.x or 12.x now in terms of default settings and behaviors. This is good experience for the test as well! You're expected to understand how to tftp IOS updates into and out of flash memory.

There are no more question about write term and the like? That's awesome I don't have to remember two sets of commands!
