Sorry folks it has been a long time, but have I got a doozy for you. I had my 2 CIsco 4000 series routers stashed away for a few months, and now they are acting flaky, here is what I am getting.

My guess is that you have no startup-config, or the config-register isn't set to look in NVRAM for the config file.

Theres no problem -

Router 1 has a line "service config" in its config telling it to try and find a config by TFTP - it's a standard line in some IOS's.

Router 2 has nothing wrong with it, it's simply a default config.

The IOS on both is quite old, it may be worth upgrading the IOS. To put them on the web you'll need a terminal server of some sort.

I have been experimenting with that and what worked for me is port-forwarding tel;net connections to my ADSL Router/Firewall to the Router interface IP address.

If you have a dsl or some sort of cable-modem firewall that supports forwarding connections, try that.

Mat..what sort of terminal servers? I need to experiment with that as well.

You'd want a terminal server so that you could access the console port of lab devices. This way, changes in IP settings, routing, etc. won't affect connectivity. You can't really experiment too much on a lab that relies on IP connectivity. You'd end up kicking yourself off and not being able to get back on. You'd use a terminal server such as a 2509 or 2511.

Where can I find out more about terminal services so I could get console access to my home lab (2501 routers and 1900 switch) ?

I use telnet remotely at the moment.

Check out the following link. It has some good general information as well as configuration examples centered around the 2500 series.
