| Ok I need help on this. This one beats me.
I mentioned in a previous thread about having problems with not being able to see any boot messages or console messages. I set that aside and proceeded with password recovery procedure by changing the config register on my 2500 router IOS 12.0.
Old config register setting: 0x2102
on ths cisco page its says:
- Ignores break
- Boots into ROM if initial boot fails
- 9600 console baud rate default value for most platforms
so I changed it to: 0x2120
- Boots into ROMmon
- 19200 console speed
I tried console connection with all baud rates, no output, nothing. its blank. I tried all break sequences on another cisco paper. Nothing seems to work.
Probably, if its booting to rommon, I might not be able to see the bootmessages because they were disabled in the first place.
I'm stuck now. any ideas?

| Ok i finally made it. I guess i was sweting it but didn't notice a faulty cable. I cant test the rollover with my basic cable tester either. It doesnt support it.
I am probably in Rommon mode. I'll try to follow a paper found on cisco site from here

| Sounds like your having fun.....I'd be surprised if your cables gone faulty since 2 days ago. The pinouts are on the cisco website, do you have a multimeter to test them?? Are you using the old grey plugs - make sure it says terminal on it.
Can I suggest you try the following -
Put your console speed to 19200 as detailed in your post - close hyperterminal, and restart it - double check the baud rate at the botton of the screen. It's important to close the window fully - sometimes the baud rate doesn't change correctly, as you have no output we'd better be sure!!
As your running blind you'll need to guess what the routers doing.....
Turn the router on and leave it for 5 mins to boot - you think it goes into ROMMON - the doc says type "i" to restart. Press "i" and hit return - leave it for another 5 mins, then hit ctrl-c a couple of times. Hopefully it will boot up and you can start again!!
Let us know how you get on.

| Finally i was able to SEE the ROMon prompt and i followed the instructions to change registers
> o/r 0x2102
> i
and it worked! The cable wasnt faulty I guess. Just hyperterminal, baud rate and stress! I often overlook the little things when I'm stressed out.
After some sweating. I can sit back and smile again,I had my share of troubleshooting and messing around. your hints make me think logical about things I might have missed.
Now, I'm off to some ACL labs! |
