| i have two questions:
1. if you have two routers connected with correct config info, do they need to have the same bandwidth configured on both routers?
2. do two routers connected to eachother via a serial cable need to have the same network address? example: 192.168.1.1/24 and 192.168.1.2/24, or could one router's int have a different network address?
im fairly new and im tryin to understand it, thanks

| 1. bandwidth.....no
speed.........yes
2. yes | |

Almost,
1. Bandwidth - As stnosc says the bandwidth statements don't have to match - there are scenarios where they may not actually have the same speeds, this may be covered in frame relay, with point to multipoint. It's a common misconception that the bandwidth statement is used to fix the speed - this isn't the case, the bandwidth statement is only used when calculating metrics, or calculating the reliability etc on the show interface commands. You may have a 9k6 cicuit but setting the bandwidth to 2M won't magically increse the bandwidth. This brings you on to -
Speed - I'm assuming stnosc mean clock rate?? This is only set on interfaces which are DCE - in a back to back cable scenario this will be one end - if you try to type it in on the DTE you won't break anything, you'll just get a warning, or it may be completely ignored....

Not clockrate. I know it is only set on DCE interfaces. I do mean speed. If you have a router with a 100MB FastEthernet interface connecting to a router with 10MB Ethernet interface, you must hard set the FastEthernet interface to 10MB..."speed 10".
We use bandwidth statements as a reference for our network management software. If the actual link for instance is 3Meg, we set the bandwidth on the interface to 3Meg so that the charts for percentage utilization will be accurate.
I do realize he was talking about serial interfaces. I just thought I'd throw that in there for extra meat.

| Cool - I'm stuck on another boring 12 hour shift with absolutely nothing to do!!
A little bit of useless meat for you (till you do the switching exam), Cisco recommend fixing speed/duplex every time due to different manufacturers interpretations of autonegotiation. Of course 95% of the time you won't have problems!!! If ever you see "late collisions" in your show int then look towards this.
Sorry I'm bored and waffling!

Correct. We've found that we have to "hard set" the speed/duplex on some of our switch interfaces and computer network adapters because auto-negotiation causes collisions and port errors.
I feel for you, man. Shift work sucks.

Don't worry about me - I start a CCIE role on tuesday part time - then full time once my current boss finds someone to fill my shoes!!
I just hope he doesn't take too long!!! And you wont have to put up with my rants as often....

| I wish you luck in your new role, then....but don't stop ranting. That's what it takes sometimes to keep the knuckleheads in line.
