Author Wrote 640-801... and failed

Well, I wrote it this morning and failed with a 763. I guess the funny thing is, I thought I had done *worse* than that until I saw the score.

I studied the 3rd ed. Sybex and clearly did not know enough about EIGRP, OSPF and frame relay.

So... anyway, now that that's off my chest, I'm off to sim myself into oblivion so that I can go back in a week or two and actually get this thing. I don't think it'll be that bad once I actually know *all* the content.

It might be becuase you studied the wrong book? I think its 4th edtion now.

Yes... exactly. I was trying to supplement what I got out of the 3rd ed. book at the last minute, and I really didn't get enough of the added material down cold (or at all, for that matter).

Sorry to hear that trev...we've all been there at least once.

Best of luck on the retake, we know you can do it!

Good Day Trev21

Bye thanks

I think only the people who set the exams know this. You could ask Cisco.

I doubt they would deign to bother replying though.

Yeah, I'm sure it'll work out next time. I've ordered myself a copy of the updated Sybex - I like the way that Todd Lammle approached the subject matter. I'm sure going through the revisions, some sim labs and the new ed. practice exams should be enough to get the 7 or 8 (I'm guessing) more questions I'd need to pass.

Well, I have to say things worked much better the second time around.

Having prepared properly and read the material I needed to read, my score rose a full two hundred points to a 963!

Now, on to bigger and better things!

Hey great man!

I have been following your travails hoping that you would report back the second time, since I am contemplating taking this exam and trying to decide the best way to study for it.

Any study suggestions now that you have seen both sides of the coin?

For me, the CD that came with the Sybex 4th edition really helped. I mentioned upthread that I would spend more time in the simulator, but I didn't end up doing that so much.

What really worked for me was:
Reading each chapter enough until I could score over 90% on the chapter tests consistently.

Doing all 8 practice exams on the CD and reviewing any questions I got wrong. For the last four of these practice exams, I was scoring between 93-97%. If it'd been a lot less than that, I would have done them over again until I could get high scores.

Before the exam, going through areas that I knew I was slightly weaker on and making summarization notes.

Reviewing the above summarization notes.

Also, I went through the trial CertSim that comes on the CD too. I think this would help you more to get a handle on the styles of questions that will be asked if you've never been through one of their exams before.

Good luck in your studying!

Thanks and great information. I hope to get going on this one soon, but was debating brtween the Sybex 4th Ed and the Cisco Wendell Odom book, or both.

The prevailing opinion seems to be that the Sybex book will get you through the exam and the Cisco book will give you a broader, better knowledge base. Haven't read either yet, so I have no opinion. I am still trying to get into gear to finish off some MS stuff first, I think....

Good luck woith the next one...
