| I got my home-lab set finally. and I am having some problem I am not able to troubleshoot (still studying semster 1 cisco academy but just messing around to prepare for later stage)
2x 2501 router
1x switch 1900
1x ADSL/Hub/ Netgear router
===================
1st Floor :
=================
ADSL hub 192.168.0.1/24
host1 192.168.0.2/24
host2 192.168.0.3/24
Cisco 2501 (Alpha)
DCE clock rate 64000
E0 192.168.0.10/24
S0 192.168.2.1/24
Cisco 2501 (Omega)
S0 192.168.2.2/24 DTE
E0 192.168.4.1/24
=================
Ground Floor:
==================
Catalyst 1900 (Zen)
192.168.4.2/24
host3 192.168.4.3/24
host4 192.168.4.4/24
=======================
Router Alpha is configured properly for rip v2and all interfaces are up and can be pinged and S0 interface of Omega can be pinged too.
but when I am configuring omega i cant get Ethernet0 to work i cant ping it too. its connected to a host.
this is the output.. I hope someone has a clue why this portion of the network is down
Router Omega:
Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down

| Try a new cable. | |

| ehm ...
what a shameful mistake. I swear I thought this cable was good and working. I Didn't even think about getting my cable tester! I keep telling my young brothers that most network problems are physical layer problems
I guess the cisco equipment and configuration got me a bit intimidated

| the weird thing is
when one of the routers is connected with a good cable to the ADSL router, the interface ethernet 0 is up and line is up..
if i connect it to a host with a good cable, the line is down. I was just testing one router connected to dsl, and with serial to second router that is connected as a means of tesing to a host (will be later connected to a switch though)
what am i doing wrong here?

| When you connect a host directly to an router's ethernet interface, you need to use a crossover cable. Your ADSL router more than likely has a built-in hub or switch and would use a typical straight-through cable. | |

| aha.. will remember that.
I've connected them all now and somewhere in Router 1 (Alpha) I'm doing something wrong.
Internet
|
host A -> DSL/HUB -> E0(Router1 Alpha)S0 -> S0(Router2 Omega)E0 --> Switch --> Host B
Logged in on the switch. I could ping the connected Router2 E0 and S0 interface , Router1 E0 and S0 interface. but not the DSL hub interface? any hints?
this is the routing table of Router1
R 192.168.4.0/24 [120/1] via 192.168.2.2, 00:00:08, Serial0
C 192.168.0.0/24 is directly connected, Ethernet0
192.168.2.0/24 is variably subnetted, 2 subnets, 2 masks
C 192.168.2.2/32 is directly connected, Serial0
C 192.168.2.0/24 is directly connected, Serial0
Router2 Omega
Gateway of last resort is not set
C 192.168.4.0/24 is directly connected, Ethernet0
R 192.168.0.0/24 [120/1] via 192.168.2.1, 00:00:21, Serial0
192.168.2.0/24 is variably subnetted, 2 subnets, 2 masks
C 192.168.2.0/24 is directly connected, Serial0
C 192.168.2.1/32 is directly connected, Serial0

| Hmmm. Not sure. | |
| Warfare 2004-07-21, 10:34 pm |
| I found it finally!
Because the ADSL hub is connected to router1. I had to enable RIPv2 on my netgear ADSL hub.
thanks everyone for their hints |
