Heavy Packet Loss In DMZ

| I am having a network problem. I have been assigned the duty of setting up a web server at my organizations's DMZ. I have set the box up but am getting about 77% packet loss. I have switched out the NICs and both perform about the same way (Realtek and 3Com). I have noticed that I was given a Class A IP address but a Class C subnet mask. Could this be the problem? I know nothing of subnetting and the value were provided by my boss, but I am suspicious that this may be the problem. Any suggestions? | |

| The class of address and class of subnet mask will make no contribution to packet loss.
The packet loss could come from a number of sources:
Bad cabling
Bad NICs - but you tried them already
Faulty switch port - if you connect via a switch
Faulty ethernet port on the router
or
more than likely, a speed and duplex mismatch between the router/switch port and the NIC.
Make sure they are both set to same values, eg 100M full duplex, 10M half duplex etc.
That should do it.

| Ok, thanks, that at least gives me some ideas to play with. I have tried 3 NICs already. The machine is a Linux box and I have heard that Realtek cards usually don't do well with Linux, so I switched to a 3Com card that I *know* works since I have used it before. Tried switching the cables to no effect as well as trying different ethernet ports.
I never thought of the duplex mismatch between the router/switch port and the NIC . . . that sounds like a promising avenue so will give it a shot.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated! | |

| Nope, nothing I tried was working. I had an Edmiaz ES-3132RL switch that could handle Full/Half duplex and 10/100 Mb connections, so it has me kind of baffled. I tried a number of speeds and modes on my NIC all to no avail. | |

| What are the switch port and NICs speed and duplex set to? If one side is hard coded 100/full for example and the other side is auto-negotiate there will be a problem. The side set to auto will not see negotiation coming from the hard coded side and defaults to half duplex. I see this problem all the time. Here is a link if you're interested:

| You're right, I think it was trying to auto-negotiate. Will try this and see if it works. Thanks again. | |

| ...And remember folks, it's not a class C subnet mask, rather a huge number of subnets with few hosts each | |
