I posted this over on the Unix forum but seems kind of dead. Only 2 posts total.

I have passed the CCNA and was going to study for the BSCI exam but started to realize a few things. You need to know UNIX. I have seemed to only find LINUX+ exam. (I'm not sure if there are other exams).

If anyone has more information that would be great, books, suggestions or even why or why not I should get the Linux+ cert.

Thanks

go to bookstore, buy a general unix book, or search online.

read a little about its history and why there is such a confusion for newbies... solaris... aix... huh?

then google and read a little about linux... and then find a general book for the distro you decide on and then be competent about it

after all that, THEN ask what cert should I get to prove my proficiency in operating a *nix box, if any.

edit: the linux forum is populated by quite a few ppl who actually know *nix, they are quiet prolly because they didn't want to get into it. I read your post there at first too, didn't bother to respond becasue you have been finding out that you need unix, but not finding out what it is. try google stuff like

unix newbie <-read more stuff like its first return
linux newbie
unix introduction intro introblahblah
linux " " "
etc etc.
no body can spoonfeed you *nix

I could take your post a couple of different ways. Smartass comment or "give a man a fish he eats for a day, teach him to fish and he eats for ever" comment. Either way no matter.

Lets all make sure that everyone that is a CCNA knows WHY they should be or wants to be a CCNA. Not good enough now to just want to change carrers and make more money.

Don't waste energy on how you should take my post because I don't care how you take it and you shouldn't concern yourself with such trivial matter.

The only thing that matter to the usefulness of this thread is whether you have done it. Ppl that get caught up with the delivery go no where because not everyone, your boss included, care to give it to you sweet and easy.

Time served reading the background will make you appreciate *nix a lot more and nothing exposes you more than if you become certified but can not engage in a converstation regarding the basic origin of unix/linux and its past, present, and future.

for the purpose of cisco, if you have to pair it with any *nix box, go solaris.

ebay for a sun ultra 5 for 150 bucks or so. say no to solaris on 486
