BSCI: Sybex vs Cisco Press

| Hello
I have always used the Sybex books to study for my MCSE and used it to pass my CCNA exam. I changed my thinking when I started looking for books to use to study for the BSCI exam. I wanted to make sure I got the latest version. I picked up the Cisco Press BSCI Second Edition (copy right/First printing April 2004 - ISBN 158705146x) I figured its from Cisco Press and it should be updated for the latest items on the 642-801 exam.
Here is my problem.... I kind of find the Cisco Press books really really dry. They may cover everything you need (The book I have now is over 900 pages) but the way the book explains the context puts me to sleep. I have heard a few so so things about the Sybex book, both good and bad. (believe the copy right is Nov 2003- ISBN 0782142931)
I'm not sure if I should go back to the Sybex books or keep reading the Cisco press and see if I can muster though it.
Thanks for any advice I can get.

| May I recommend, sir, you do not read the Cisco Press book when you go to bed? Please do not be offended, the opening sentence is intended to be an innocent joke.
I am using both the Sybex book and the Cisco Press book in my studies, and I find the Cisco Press book more valuable because it is (in my opinion) more accurate. I have also checked the errata for the Sybex book, and it is quite lengthy indeed. One would believe than an author is more careful in writing a technical book.
I am sure you will make a decision that works best for yourself, sir, and I wish you only successes in your pursuit!

| never read before going to bed If I want to remember any of it.
I believe I am going to give Cisco Press another chance. Maybe once I get deeper into the book I'll find it less dry. I could always pick up the Sybex book I guess and use it as another resource. I guess that never hurts.

You must have a different ISBN number/ver then I do. I checked the errata and it only have 4 items. Very small items at that. The book I'm talking about is ISBN:0782142931
Here is a link to be able to read the first 2 chapters free.

You may be right, sir. I did aquire the Sybex book a while ago, so it may very well be an older version. I do like the Cisco Press book more, however that is a matter of personal preference.
Oh, I am so deeply sorry!! I just read your first post again, and I realize that you are referring to CCNP books, while I am referring to CCNA books!! Please accept my apologies! I feel so ashamed! |
