Welcome to the forum!

Firstly, hands on experience is essential. Try and pick up a couple of entry routers from e-bay (The 2501 or 2503 will be perfect)

Then go for either the Sybex book on the CCNA or the Cisco Press book. Both have their weak areas so you are better getting both if you can afford it.

A switch would be even better. The 1900 or 2900 series are fine for the CCNA.

If you can not afford hardware then go for a virtual lab or router sim.

The only drawback with the software is that the labs are designed for the specific areas so you won't get the functionality and availability of all the IOS commands that you would if you purchased a router or two!

Cisco's web site has a great search engine and you can find pretty much anything you need relating to the exam and all aspects of routing.

Hope this helps.

That's cool. But would i be able to do every possible lab for CCNA with just 2 routers and a switch. Would that just be enough?
Thank you

Some of the labs are not possible with two switches alone but the configuration of the routing protocols, enabling interfaces, applying access lists and learning the IOS functions is quite easy with two routers.

I used two and passed my CCNA.

You will need three at least for the CCNP and a catalyst based switch as I found out not too long ago before my revision started in earnest.

3 routers or 3 switches? ...and what number of catalyst, 1900, 2900?

Working on BSCI and I have 2 routers and a 1900 switch.

3 routers, 2501 or 2503 so that you can connect 3 together and configure OSPF, IS-IS, EIGRP, IGRP etc.

As for switches, a 2950/24 would be your best bet and if you can afford two you can VLAN to the max and cluster them with the catalyst IOS.

hope this helps.

Ok guys,

I have a rough idea of what i might need but here is what i spotted earlier on on the top shelf in the stock room at work. Potentially, i might be able to borrow it.

1 X 26000
1 X 36000

What good is that? (for CCNA)

Thank you for your help.

I want to know where you work, so I can get a job. 2600 is right on target, not sure about the 3600.

Well I'm using CCNA virtual lab plus experiment with the cisco routers and switches at my job with the IT guy cause I'm preparing to put a high performance engine in my first sportcar so its not cheap with what I'm spending on the car.

Well, hscott63, you've confused me now. What do you reckon of the gear i can get? That's my question!!!

Thank you

PS: I have a question: When we put MCP, MCSA, should we not put a "S" at the end of MCP because you need at least 3 of them to be MCSA

Goldarak, I'm in the same boat as you but I'm browsing ebay for cisco routers and switches as mention by our knowledgable members previous post to this thread. I passed 210,215,218 and 216 exams to become a MCSA 2K.

Ok, just though i'd bring it back to the top...

- 2600 and 3600
- Sun Microsystem Netro t1 105
- Loads of dram and sim for 2600
- A big empty green chassis that says 3600 at the front and has compartments inside when looking from behind: any idea what that might be?
- 2 X 24 port switch cards, just the cards.

I am certain the Sun box is no use but just thought i'd mention it in any case.

Any idea if i can use any of the above for ccna and if yes or no what else migh i need.

Thank you so much all. I know you are stars and i will get flooded with answers.
