I have found the following question in a practice test:

Which of the following is a valid representation of class C network numbers range?
1. 1.0.0.0 to 126.0.0.0
2. 128.1.0.0 to 191.254.0.0
3. 192.0.1.0 to 223.255.254.0
4. 0.0.0.0 to 126.0.0.0
5. 128.0.0.0 to 191.255.0.0
6. 192.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.0

I am reading in one of my books that class C networks range from 192.0.0.0 through 223.255.255.0, but I do not see that amongst the choices! Quite peculiar indeed! Do you, ladies and gentlemen, think the question, the answers rather, are wrong? Or is it that I am missing something very obvious (it would not be the first time )?

Good qeustion !!

The answer is 3. 192.0.1.0 to 223.255.254.0..

Why?? Simple.. because both network address 192.0.0.0, and network address 223.255.255.0 are reserved.

I agree with perfectionist, but... let me make a few confidence:
RFC 1812 now permits the use of all-zeros and all-ones subnets in a CIDR-compliant environment(use modern routing protocols). Microsoft's TCP/IP stack allows it, but is extremely recommended not to use if you aren't definitely that all of the software in the network recognize this convention.
Otherwise, I realize that option 6 is the specification of the first number of the Class C Network ID's range [192.0.0.0 to 223.255.255.0] and its corresponding subnet mask [255.255.255.0]

So, from the six answers, the only valid one is 3.

Thank you very much for your input, gentlemen! I am still somewhat confused. I understand networks 192.0.0.0 and 223.255.255.0 are reserved, but even if they are reserved, they still are class C networks, aren't they?

Yes, they are. I think your confusion could be due to interpretation.
I think the answer to this question could include any network numbers between the first and the last in the range [192.0.0.0 to 223.255.255.0], so from this six possiblies, the only one correct is 3.

Think this is a valid between others included in the hole range.
Examples:
192.1.0.0 to 223.254.0.0 or
198.254.0.0 to 216.92.40.0 or....

I see, I see. Now that you mention it I read the question again, and it says "a valid representation...", not "the valid representation...". I can understand now why I was confused. Thank you so much for your input, sir!!
