Hi all,

First post here for me.

Just got to pass N+. N+ is my last MCSA exam and i am glad cos I really want to get into networking, i just don't enjoy this MS business

Starting CCNA next week, I was looking at books and noticed the following:
1 - Wendell Odom from CISCO Press
2 - Richard Deal from McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
3 - Todd Lammle from Sybex

I did my MCSA MS exams using Sybex books and I thought that they only covered half the stuff required for the exam (had to take 70-291 twice).

Option 2 seems good and has good reviews in Amazon but you guys seem to go on about 1 and 3.

I feel like buying 1 and 2 or do you think that one should need only one study book and bying 2 books is a bit overkilled?
Just what is everyone's opinion? Be open and tell me all frankly what you think?

Thank you very much

Cisco Press is good. Lammle is pretty bad... No book beats some hands on experience.

I would say the opposite of dmaftei. I don't like how the Cisco Press books reads. They seem very dry to me. I like the Sybex books but on the other hand you WILL need the hands on experience. I would suggest getting 2 Cisco 2501 routers, AUI tranreciver and learning as much as you can. Use the books as a reference to questions you have while you are beating around on the routers.

I am serious about it. If possible, use both Cisco press books and Sybex. Because things that are not covered in Cisco press books is covered in Sybex book and vice versa. Using two of them make sure that u dun miss anything.

But if you do not have any real router and switch to play with.. and all you have is just some router simulator, then Sybex can be a great help because at the end of every chapter they provide you with a complete router or switch configuration as opposed to Cisco press which show you partial configuration only.

If you are still not sure ... visit www.amazon.com and read the reviews for these two books!!

Thanks Perfecionist.

PS: You're a bit of a perfectionist aren't you?

The Sybex book is great. I've never read a Cisco Press book aside from CCNA Flash Cards (which sucks) so I cannot offer a fair evaluation of their material.
