| I have a dlink DSL router and a static IP. I was wondering if anyone had an idea of which would be the best way to setup the DSL router so I can access my cisco routers from outside my lan. Firewall, virtual server?

| Once you have IP addresses established for the ethernet interfaces of your routers, you'd just need to set up port forwarding on your DSL router to forward connections to its public ip to the internal ip of a router on port 21. The bad thing is if you want to practice from remote locations and you change the ethernet interface's IP address or shutdown the interface, your connection will be lost. As far as remote console access, you could set up a serial server but they are expensive. You could also set up remote desktop or VNC or sshd on your computer and just log into that computer that way and access the routers via hyperterm or kermit or teraterm etc. | |

| I've already got 2 ways that I can connect to my desktop from a remote location and use hyperterm to connect to my router via the console. One is via the Remote control on XP and then connecting via the modem I have hooked to the router. I have to put port forwarding on my dlink to be able to remote into my desktop. I just haven't had any luck with getting anything else to forward. I was also thinking about telnetting into the router and having the port 23 forwarding but again no luck with getting it to work.
...oh well like the issue I had with the modem working, I'm sure its simple just missing the one step that puts it all together. | |

| I've got the telnet to work using the static ip but only with in my local lan. If I use the static ip outside of the local lan it won't connect. I believe the dsl router is setup like it should be cause I have other port fowarding filters on the dsl router and it works fine. I've created a IP ROUTE on the cisco router to point to the static ip via the default gateway of the dsl router. Something I'm missing on the cisco router maybe? |
