Passed 640-801 today. Yippie!

| I took the 640-801 for the first time today and passed with a score of 935/1000 which I was satisfied with. I also had about 30-40 minutes of extra time left at the end. It wasn't easy or extremely difficult or very fun but I passed so it's a burden lifted. My two best resources for passing the exam were the Sybex CCNA Study Guide by Tom Lammle and CertSim (testing software) by RouterSim also from Lammle. Without these two resources, I probably would not have passed or the exam might just have taken longer. I also used two Cisco 2501 routers and the Cisco Press CCNA Flash Cards (which aren't very relative to the real exam in my opinion).
Thanks everyone.
Side Note:
Dali, you freaked me out before the exam but it's okay...

| Congratulations my friend, it's great to see people passing exams because they know what they are doing.
Edit your profile and change the CCNA to a certification you now hold as opposed to working towards.
Well done. | |

| Good score and you did well with the time left, I took ages on this exam.....never typed so slow in my life when it came to the router configs | |

| I'm guessing when you said "It wasn't easy or extremely difficult or very fun" is because you hear so many people telling us that the exam is so difficult its silly?
...I'm also guessing thats why you said the comment about joe?
btw: How many sims did you have?
| smrkdown 2004-03-24, 8:15 pm |
| I said that it wasn't easy because you have to know your stuff. I said it wasn't extremely difficult because if you know your stuff you'll do fine and all of the material presented in the exam was covered in my studies. I said that it wasn't fun because the test anxiety, stress, nervousness, etc. is mentally taxing. I made the comment about joe dali becasue I asked for any last minute advice and he offered his insight (which I appreciated) and he threw out some terms that I was not well familiar with (like legacy DDR) and I started to frantically leaf through my books less than an hour before I left for the exam. I had three simulations on the exam each taking about 4-6 minutes to complete between writing down the configs, finding and fixing the problem, testing and verifying the solution, and saving my work. | |

| Congratulations Smrkdown. Well done.
To finish the exam with 30min still remaining, you know the stuff very well.
BTW, I failed my first attempt of 801 with 780! I knew that I was in trouble when I had a problem to complete my simulations in time. I was having a problem understanding what is wrong with the configurations. I also have to pass 2 simulations as I was running out of time.
I am not a quitter, so I plan to re-sit within 2-3 weeks.
My question is how do you diagnose configuration problems quickly:
a. Do you start pinging from one router to the connected interface of the neighboring router and keep going until you come across a failed ping and then investigate way it failed to ping?
b. Do you do "sho run" to see the running config of each router and then compare them for any differences(like encapsulations etc) or spot any missing configs(like clocking on DCE)?
I know that it all depends the question asked or the clue given in the question, but how do you approach on simulation to figure out what the problem is?

| worrywarm 2004-03-25, 11:28 am |
| my way is sh run. If you are familiar with the config enough, you can tell the problem right away
BTW, Ping is to test your config.
| smrkdown 2004-03-25, 12:05 pm |
| I wrote down the configurations as they were supposed to be and then I logged in and compared the running-config with what it was supposed to be. After I found the problems, I fixed them and saved my configurations. I then did diagnostics including ping and telnet and some show commands. | |

| So do they tell you how the router is supposed to be setup before hand, and you just have to make it that way?
Or do they say somethings not working and you have to figure out why?
Or a little of both...?
thanks | |

| Here is a link on Cisco's web page that gives you an idea of how the sim will look
Cisco Sim
I haven't taken the test yet but from what I understand they tell you something is wrong with one of the servers, can't connect or something like that and its your job to find out why and fix it.
| smrkdown 2004-03-25, 9:04 pm |
| They tell you the configurations that the routers are supposed to have and you may have to add or change certain things to achieve a desired result or you may have to fix the current configuration to get it working or a combination of both. | |

though I'm not surprised.. You always add value to the discussion around here...
good job. | |

Questions:
Did you use the Sybex Study Guide Fourth Edition? Did you use the CCNA™ CertSim™ and Todd Lammle's CCNA™ 604-801Prep Exam Questions?
Congratulations!!! | |
| smrkdown 2004-03-29, 7:34 pm |
| Thanks.
Yes I used the Sybex CCNA Study Guide 4th Edition book. The book comes with a trial version of CCNA CertSim from RouterSim and I upgraded to the full version of the program. It was a worthwhile investment.
| Negotiator 2004-04-02, 8:17 pm |
| Now i read CCNA 4.0 from Sybex & 2 books from cisco press (ICND & Intro)
Let me know anything special to read for exam.
i'll sit exam within 3 weeks.
Pls suggest to me pass in one time.
cheers

hmmm...
I'm glad you're against braindumps... But if you guys (Cert21) promote and sell braindumps, how do you expect people to stay away from them.
Sites like:examsheets, testing, and actualtests are all sponsors down here. And as a matter of fact, I saw you close the thread of a member here on the CCNA forum becuase he used testking pdf's for passing the exam....
I don't understand.

| No one understands.
Actually, it could have to do something with money.
| Sexy Lexy 2004-04-04, 1:20 pm |
| My policy against brain dumps and similar sites does not reflect the sponsorship of examnotes or cert21. | |
| 2lazybutsmart 2004-04-04, 1:27 pm |
| ..but your policy is Cert21/EN's policy right? I'm not talking about "you" personally. I'm talking about the policy every moderator should adhere to when moderating for EN/Cert21.
I dont't want to start a fight over this......
But my POINT remains,

| No fight started, don't worry!
I moderate on my own time and receive no imbursement for my troubles.
If the site wishes to use such sites as sponsors then who am I to argue?
My view is that brain dumps and similar materials are strictly off limits in any of the forums I moderate.
Considering the views of certain members on here (Regarding using dumps to pass exams and then wonder why threads are closed) I wonder if it’s all worth it.
Considering a long time colleague has recently abandoned this forum because of this matter and his name being associated to this; along with threads being removed due to people ripping off members, it does make you wonder.
| 2lazybutsmart 2004-04-04, 1:56 pm |
| I know, I know... I understand. You really can't argue with anybody about it. And you're doing a great job, so keep up the good work.

p.s. like a watchman at the gates of a terrorist sleeper cell, who considers terrorim "off-limits", sometimes some things just don't dial in. And one of the things that haven't dialed in my brain cells yet is how an anti-braindumps moderator can keep watch over a pro-braindumps forum.
~~end rant. | |

| It won't be for much longer, trust me. | |
