which of the following determines how often a root bridge or switch sends out a BPDU msg?
a. The hello interval configured on a nonroot switch
b. The hello interval configured on a root switch
c. It is always every 2 sec
d The switch reacts to BPDUs received from the root switch by sending another BPDUs in 2sec after receiving the root BPDU

The gaven answer is b; my choice is c

I thought BPDU is used for election process. When there is no root switch elected yet, how could b be an valid answer?? Shouldn't it be sent every 2 sec???

Anyone knows about it?

Thanks!!

One more question about RSTP. It is said that an alternate port is a secondary, unused root port, and a backup port is a secondary, unused designated port. However, later on in the rapid transition process, it is said that the backup port would become a root port..the alternate port would become a deisignated port in case of the network topology changes...
So confusing...

anyone can help??
Thanks a lot.

You can configure the hello time anywhere from 1 to 10 seconds.

Alternate port is a sub-optimal root port. Should the root port fail, the alternate port becomes the new root port. Similarly, the backup port is a sub-optimal port for a segment.

Check CCNA: ICND (Cisco press) p.51. Interestingly, I found no mention of RSTP in Sybex material.

I believe you must have a root at all times. When the current root goes down, another switch takes over, and it will dictate the hello interval.
