When you go show version and it tells you what the IOS is.

How can I tell which version of the IOS is newer:

eg

12.1(9)

or

11.3(11d)

or

12.2(20)

Is it to do with the figure in the brackets or the 11 or 12 number.

Read from left to right and the higher numbers are more recent.

12.x is newer than 11.x
12.2(x) is newer than 12.1(x)

I think there are exceptions to this but the general rule is as I put above.
