Different data communications services?

| I know that frame relay is the most popular communications to use for connecting WAN's. My question is what are some other affordable communications available, DSL, ATM, etc? Also what is IP based frame? I have been trying to find white papers on what is a cost efeective data communication service or technoology available. Any help would be greatly appreciated. | |

| if you are asking for test preparation ignore this answer but if it is for a real world solution look into DMVPN from Cisco. Not many are using it as it is pretty new but it is cost effective and relatively stable.
IP based frame is probably referring to MPLS. The carriers have their own names for the service.

| JV thanks for the reply. No it is not a test based question I have already passed that. I am getting ready to address the cost of frame relay and was curious as to the opinon of other professionals that have been in or around is situation. | |

| Did you look DMVPN up? Yes there are downsides, but it is cost effective.

| also what is the benifit of partitioning flash? I have a 2600 and a 2500 series router I use at home and was wantig to let a couple guys from work use them for studying. Would partitioning the flash give them a "serperate work space" adn not interfer with my traffic? | |

| You'd be able to have multiple IOS images residing in your flash memory. Then you could specify which partition to boot from. Either way, (single or multiple partitions) you'll only be running one IOS at at time, so they won't be able to have their own operating environment that won't affect the operation of your router and the traffic flowing through it. Did that make sense? | |

| JV - I did reveiw the DMVPN and it seems promising. It appears to ride DSL and use tunneling. Which from what I read gives you alot of flexiblity as far as setting up multiple redunant links. the downside seems to be teh overhead for the tunneliing and keys. What are your thoughts?

| The down side really is the processing power required by the encryption so it is advised you vpn hardware module to absorb that load. You can use the solution over any internet provider ie cable, dsl or internet T1, but if you can afford it I recommend the internet T1s from a major carrier like QWest or MCI because the cable/dsl help desks really suck and they tend to do maintenance whenever they want which will down your site during the work day from time to time.
Cisco's has excellent recommended configs on CCO. I think they were in the white paper but can't remember for sure.

| The new 1841 realy has the potetial to fit DMVPN nicely. Ihaev been looking at it pretty hard to replace the 1721's we've been buying. from teh hardware side it seems that having a router with dual ethernet int's just makes sense now a days. Not to mention the dual WIC slots as well. the price is not to bad for this router hopefully it will not go up!!!!
the IOS that comes with this router is a good fit for DMVPN with the FW, IPS, and VPN capabilites wow!!!
They just keep getting better. | |

| Just another thought on connectivity, but have you looked into Metro Ethernet? It might be available in your area.

| Metro ethernet or TLS as Verizon calls it, is good for your local remote sites that are larger as it is more expensive. We have recently started using it too.
